Confirmed… Syrian Defector and Former Head of Military Police Says Regime Used Chemical Weapons in Attack on Homs

This past Sunday Syrian medics reported that poisonous gas was sprayed in a rebel-held neighbourhood in Homs. Yesterday, the former head of Syria’s military police who just defected confirmed that the regime had used chemical weapons in an attack on Homs.

Seven people have died in Homs after they inhaled a "poisonous gas" used by government forces in a rebel-held neighbourhood, activists said.

Activists also told Al Jazeera on Sunday night that scores of others were affected in al-Bayyada neighbourhood. Side effects reported include nausea, relaxed muscles, blurred vision, and breathing difficulties.

Here's What The 'Agent-15' Chemical Doctors Say Was Used In Syria Does To People

Reports that chemical weapons were used this weekend in Syria were effectively confirmed today after doctors at the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) interviewed witnesses and victims of the attack.

Doctors at SAMS describe a "probable" use of what chemical specialists refer to as "Agent-15," or 3-Quinuclidinyl Benzilate, or what NATO calls "BZ." They classified their report as "probable" because the higher classification of "confirmed" would require laboratory testing.

Turkey has confirmed that Syria's embattled president Bashar al-Assad has asked Venezuela for asylum for his family as opposition forces continue to make military gains on the ground.

While speculations emerge in international media that Assad asked Venezuela for asylum, Turkey's Caracas Embassy asked Venezuelan authorities to validate the claims. Venezuela's Foreign Ministry informed Turkish diplomats that claims that Assad sent a letter requesting asylum to the leader of the Latin American country, Hugo Chavez, are true.
