It could also be argued that gun crime rose when British police began to be armed.
This video gives the impression that we used to carry guns before 1997, we didn't, guns were only used for shooting practice and you needed a licence, guns were never used for self protection which would have been illegal.
As for fox hunting, as someone who lives in the country and you get a bunch of toffs rampaging through your garden and there is fuck all you can do about it because there is a good chance the local judge might be among them.
I sympathise with the US entitlement to carry guns, but don't confuse your version of hunting to ours.

I think you misunderstood the word "toffs" although at times during hunts they can behave like thugs, a toff is the landed gentry and those in authority, usually posh people that went to private school (paid for by wealthy parents and talk like David Cameron and the queen)
