Constitutional rights don't begin at 18. He had a Right to protect himself and his sister. The parents obviously didn't do what the majority of parents do which is make the mistake of hiding away any guns they have instead of exposing them a tool that is to be respected and not feared. Now obviously a child that hasn't shot a few rounds could never be trusted and a household like that might find trigger locks to be the answer but only till they're old enough to shoot. When they get to the age you can leave the house for short periods of time you need to be confident that they won't burn down the house and they will repel home invaders. "Children" were more then capable of this 100 years ago. Only society and child rearing has changed, the criminal mind hasn't.
