Screw that! Our tree was BARE! I mean, my kids got socks underwear and clothes. No toys, no trinkets. Did they care? NOPE! We're teaching our children to materialistic little bastards!

Stop bitching and complaining about how little your kids got for Christmas and teach them to appreciate not only the reason for the season, but teach them to appreciate what they have and to see how fortunate they are for what they do have and what they get.

My middle child opened a gift of underwear, and his big brother said "did I get underwear to??" I am so proud of my kids for not really giving a crap about the gifts, but they cared about the meaning of the holiday and they appreciate what they have.

I struck a balance between feeling like a failure and teaching kids about the spirit of Christmas.

I'm not hanging my head at all. Underwear is a necessity, xmas is a special time. I always get practical things.. well I wasn't always so practical, I used to go all out.. but I'm wiser now.

I wouldn't change a thing about what I bought this year.

Re: So many bitching about how little they could give their kids for Xmas
I don't think it's so much about the gifts as it is in comparing this year to years past.

Lots of people I'm sure have had less to spend on gifts with the rise in fuel and groceries. I'm sure there are others who've had to deal with job losses/pay cuts and are even struggling just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.

As far as the kids go, try to think back when you went to school! Don't you remember after Christmas break how everyone was all excited and sharing stories with everyone about the gifts they received? Now, your kids will get to show off their new socks and underwear while other classmates will be bragging about the new Xbox system and games they got from their parents.

But who knows? Maybe there won't be that many kids in school this year receiving fancy gifts from their parents.

I know what you mean though. Christmas is a LOT more than just presents, and it is the parents' responsibility to pass that message on to their kids.

Here's a response.

Kids are kids only once....and they only believe in Santa for a short time. Let them enjoy being kids for a while...and that includes getting toys and being able to play / learn from them.

There is plenty of time later on to buy them clothes.
You are mentally damaging those kids. You are the opposite extreme of those who spoil them with commercialism. Neither extreme is good.
Wise up....you are doing them no favors.

I am fortunate to have been able to give my daughter the necissities. For this holiday season I gave her a flute and a violin. I'll be paying a monthly rental fee for 2-3 years. she loves the flute and is very inspired. she is happy and content and not in need and appreciative.

I spoiled my gf and our daughter to death... I work hard and giving them wicked gifts is amazing.

A huge x-mas dinner with the family and exchanging gifts is a blast... I don't care about getting presents but I love giving... i love seeing someone i love open up a thoughtful gift and seeing there face light up.

Actually it's more about the OP trying to justify to herself/himself on GLP that it is OK to DEPRIVE her kids of childhood memories and learning experiences.

Reality is....she/he is as much an extremist as those who go crazy with consumerism.
Subconsciously he/she knows what they are doing is "fringe" and is looking for support on GLP to justify the actions.

Ohh, get off yer high horse. Who cares what you did or did not get your kids for Christmas. How dare you come on here and criticize people for complaining about the economy! The economy sucks right now and many of us are feeling it! Kids need to be kids once in a while and Christmas is a time for that for some people. Let people be.

Bullshit. The Winter Solstice had nothing to do with Christ, it is something which has been celebrated since neolithic times.

Christmas' direct predecessor, Saturnalia, was the Roman celebration of the winter solstice.

If you want a holiday solely about Christ, I suggest you create one of your own instead of usurping another, and it certainly shouldn't be during the winter.

How bad is their clothing if they get " giddy " about a pair of underpants as a so called xmas present? Wow - they are either just amusing you or that is past sad. I agree that it does not need to be expensive, but surely some cheap crayons, books, toys shows a lot more caring then wrapping items of every day need and pretending it's a gift for them. And If you supposedly don't believe in giving a gift - why are you handing undies and socks to your children and pretending it's one? Be better off not giving anything and providing the basics as what they are.

Your ideaology is ruinous to your kids in the long term. As it is, the fact that you are telling them "Socks > Xbox" and oppressing their chance to have fun with their peers and join in on modern social conversations is bad not only now, but will snowball within decades. Your so-called "Ivy League kids" will grow up, get the money they need to finally spoil themselves, and when the time comes to repay loans, debts, and bills, they'll have no money because they had to release years upon years of pent-up material frustration by buying things for themselves and others like crazy and have no money left, forcing them to either jump from paycheck to paycheck or come back to you and your relatives begging for more dosh.

All of GLP must be taken with a grain of salt....and a dose of fresh air from the world around us.
That said, there is much more to learn from here and other places on the web than wasting time looking at TV.
TV has become a VAST wasteland of GARBAGE.

For the record too.....never watched Fringe....never will.
Just essentially more cops vs bad guys stuff.
