Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Obama to the Indigent!!!
I should have known when everyone was pushing me to get on Disability after I got sick that it was going to be a VERY bad idea. I just didn't realize how bad it was going to be. See, I thought I would get better and be able to go back to work soon to a real job in my field. Well, that's been since 2003 and it hasn't happened yet.

Before anyone gets on their high horse about people on Disability and other Social Services, please know that since I can't work outside of the house, and I want out of this paperwork nightmare, that I started my own business last August. Since I'm a Research Analyst by trade, I figured that since I have a computer and all of the software needed to do the job right here, that working from my house would be ideal so long as I could find clients. It is slow, but I have high hopes.

Ok... here it comes :)

For the past several years, no one on SSDI or SS has received a Cost of Living increase. We've managed to get by as we always do. However, this year, for some reason, Obama decided that we should get one. Mine was for $13.00. What comes next is more than even I can believe. I'm just - flabbergasted.

My SSDI went up to $804.00 which means that this year I will make a total of $9,648.00. Still blows my mind that I'm worth so little after everything I paid into the system as I have been working since I was 14 (Hardship exception because my parents had to file bankruptcy after the oil industry in Texas hit a regulation snag from some bunch of assholes in DC).

As per usual for me, I didn't complain when my lifestyle had to change after becoming disabled. I got rid of everything that was unnecessary and what I considered a luxury from TV to furniture. As of right now, I own the following:

1 double bed with one change of sheets
2 pillows
2 bath towels
2 hand towels
5 "Family Dollar" wash cloths
1 This computer - my only connection to the outside world)
1 computer desk that it sits on
1 chair
1 desk lamp
4 plastic drinking glasses
1 coffee pot
2 coffee cups
2 dinner plates
2 cereal bowl
3 teaspoons
2 forks
2 table knives
1 plastic cutting board
1 kitchen knife
1 set of pot holders
1 dish drainer rescued from the trash bin
3 kitchen towels
2 dish clothes
2 pots with covers (1qt and 2qt)
1crock pot
1 frying pan with a cover
1 one hand mixer
1 manual can opener
1 baking sheet
1 muffin pan
1 bread pan
3 plastic bowls for mixing up stuff to cook
1 plastic colander
1 each of a stirring spoon, spatula, and a slotted spoon
1 AT&T Go Phone
1 corded phone - a gift from my mother for my business
1 Internet Connection w/required phone service*

*I can't make outgoing calls, but I can receive incoming calls. It's part of the requirements to have DSL for some stupid reason. I had to BEG to get it since I couldn't afford their "...but it's unlimited local and long distance calling in the US and Canada..." plan.

1 1999 Ford Taurus Station Wagon which I bought in January of 2007 for $1,634.38 including Tax, Title, and License after pointing out to them all of the costs I would have to shell out to make their asking price of $2500 worth my time. I paid cash which took me a year of taking PBS pledge calls to save. I worked hard for that money. And since the economy took a dive in the shitter, there is hardly any work for me with that company any more.

Oh... and 1 Cat. She keeps me sane and I don't feel so alone.

Ok. Now on to expenses :) I live in "Income Base Housing" that is a service of the community I live in and is not part of the Texas Housing program for which there is a 3 year waiting list.

These are the expenses for my bills for January as my savings are gone after having some oil leaks fixed in my car.

$258.00 - Rent
$ 59.60 - Water/Garbage/Sewer
$ 78.69 - Savings for Car Repair/Tires/Ins/Gen. Maintenance
$ 73.44 - Internet & Required Phone Line for DSL
$ 34.00 (Est. Don't have the bill yet)
$ 62.00 (Est. Don't have the bill yet)
$ 25.00 (For 4 hours of talk time for my cell which is only used in emergencies.)
$ 80.40 for my medicine on my current Part D plan
$ 42.60 for one carton of cigarettes - yes I smoke.
-------------------------------------
$713.73 Total

after deducting this from the $804.00 that leaves me with.

$ 90.27 a month for things like cleaning supplies, kitty food, personal care items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, OMG expenses I didn't see coming, gas for my car to get to and from the grocery store and the Dr., groceries and the occasional frivolous expense of a small Starbucks coffee.

Well, thanks to Mr. Obama, most of my groceries will now be coming out of that $90.27 because with my $13.00 increase, they cut my monthly Food Stamps from 37.00 to 25.00. Also - my Medicare Part D plan got bought out by another company so my Rx's now cost me 120 a month. I have NFC what I'm gonna do. None. I guess smoking and coffee (at 4.95 a 2lbs can which is the cheapest I could find) will be removed from my list of necessities as well. I don't think I'm going to be able to keep the Go Phone OR the Internet. I simply can't afford it so there goes my business :)

Thanks Obama! Merry Fucking Christmas and Happy New Year to you too. Asshole!

bump

Surely I'm not the only one here that this is happening to. Am I?

And I live in a VERY small town in BFE Texas. They don't hire the "Mentally Ill". They think it's catching or some dumb shit like that or that we are all psychotic killers. I wish I could afford to move, but my parents are old and I want to be close to them.

huffy

I know this is a rant, but it is serious. I'm going to lose my business because of this. It was my only way out of this nightmare.

Doesn't anyone care? Is no one else in this situation even those who work and have children?

With all of these new taxes coming into effect, including the 10% Tooth Tax, is there no one else who being affected at all by this? Good lord, use this thread as a rant. Get it off your chest! I need to.

While not an American, nor in America, what I read in your post is the issue with the benefit culture, in that it gives with one hand infuriating the general public while taking with the other trapping those in benefits ever deeper, and even more reliant on having to vote for whoever controls the purse strings..

Since falling into political hands it has become a nasty evil system and used almost excursively for political points scoring and gain, It certainly is not being used to provide a safety net when people hit a bump in the road and fall over, nor is it then helping them back onto their feet.

You know this system was originally formed as a umbrella charitable organisation to help those during the great depression, not just survive the great depression but get back on their feet and find a new direction, that was before political hands got hold of it after WW2 and turned it into nothing more than a tool to enslave..

Sorry I am probably not helping your rant, but it makes me angry to see a system created and run by common folk, paid for by their good will become nothing more than a political tool to entrap large sections of society in nothing more than a way to buy votes with promises of increases or threats of reductions..

The safety net should be outside of political hands, and it's ultimate job to help people back onto their feet, not trap them with more misery and more worry.

Yeah, I would care, only you are getting $114 a month more than I am. I've been disabled for many years, and am in an inescapable trap. It's a living hell.

To all the people who insult, attack, and ridicule people who are disabled, I truly hope that they find themselves in the same situation some day.

It is not the "free ride" people think it is. The stress of day to day life is sometimes overwhelming. You have my sincerest empathy for your situation. I just needed to rant. Please feel free to use this thread to rant away. I will read them all!

Actually, you are helping my rant. You've taught me a part of my own history that I didn't know so your post is perfect.

In my wildest dreams I never thought I'd end up a slave to the government. I do not believe in entitlements. I believe that you should have to have paid into the system to draw benefits - period. Unfortunately, this is not the case. All of my hard-earned money that was taken out of my paychecks doesn't go to me, or to people who have also paid into the system, it goes to people who use the Social Service system as a career choice.

Next week I have to gather up all of my personal documents and go down to the Social Services office. I hate going there. It makes me feel embarrassed. I've always paid my own way and just sitting there listening to people talking on their Obama phones is going to annoy me to no end. My parents want me to apply for one. The idea of it makes me sick to my stomach. I don't want anything from that ass other than him impeached and tossed in prison.

And you're right. When the government holds the purse strings of your life, they expect your allegiance. They've never gotten mine. Maybe this is how they punish those who don't vote for them?

somehow when people fall through the cracks or need a little help, the government seems to make it a 24/7 job to figure out how to and then fill out all of their paperwork.

next to that you need to somehow find time and money and real help to actually get back on your feet.

it seems with every new year. governments keep the gnarly tree of paperwork branch and grow.

yeah ... somehow when they raise that income they cut it away in at least two different places.
so for every 10 euro or dollar they hand out they cut away 20 ... and then ofcourse when you want 5 back you can only apply when you meet xyz requirements and fill out the proper paperwork within the required time.
