Individualism and collectivism are not opposing forces; rather they are two sides of the same coin. As society is a collective of individuals, individualism and collectivism must be kept in balance in order to have a functioning society. A completely individualist society would be just as dysfunctional as a completely collectivist one. Absolute individual freedom simply isn't possible in a functioning society. It isn't that America has abandoned its traditional principles; rather, America has never lived up to those principles, and has been corrupt since day one.
