In your proposed situation, you would actually be in fear of the person holding the tool, their intention(s), and the possible ramifications of the use of a tool outside of it's intended purpose - defense of one's self or others. The same would apply if the person referenced held a knife, bat, or hammer.

Freud spoke of the fear of the actual inanimate object being irrational and unfounded, as the object is but a tool, and useless without a person physically taking charge of and utilizing said tool. The tool is dependent upon a human being consciously engaging them in some activity in order to be of any use or service.

The vitriol that is being so perversely spread throughout our country today relies on just that; a fear of inanimate objects - as if the tools themselves present an overt threat or are independently causing death or other harm, without addressing the underlying issues of causation; specifically the decay of society as a result of the removal of personal responsibility.

This is the very "retardation" Freud eluded to now being openly exhibited by classifying weapons based on color, shape, size, use by others, or the existence/ addition/ attachment of other inanimate objects thereby creating an even heightened level of fear, apprehension, or anxiety.
