| Anonymous Coward User ID: 38906547 04/26/2013 08:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I did some searching on this forum and did not come up with anything on this (excuse me if I missed it)... Quoting: vor 29074157 Martin Bryant, said to be the shooter at the Port Arthur massacre in Australia, is from New Town, Tasmania, Australia. Adam Lanza, said to be the shooter at the Sandy Hook School massacre, is from Newtown, Connecticut. The New Town shooter in Australia was the "last straw" in the push for a gun ban in Australia. The Newtown shooter in Connecticut is being played up as "the last straw" in the push for a gun ban in the states. Interesting coincidence? Maybe someone can do some numerology on the said shooters' names? Also, can does anyone know about any mass shootings in Australia that came before the Port Arthur shooting? I dont know where this `last push' for banning guns came from-It was a knee jerk reaction for the worst mass killing by a single person ever in Oz... Before that there were no single killings using guns that even got into double digits in Oz- ever...(well not in the previous 100 years plus) Even the bikie gang wars didn't get into double digits (I know wikipedia is looked down on, but it does make a useful starting reference) [link to en.wikipedia.org] (the only other mass murders that did get into double digits was a burning- and I actually lived near that place about ten years before it happened- it was a deathtrap then- what it was a decade later???) |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 38906547 04/26/2013 08:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You can see why it had such an impact- get every other mass killing for the previous decade(all 6 of them), add up all the numbers- he took out the same number of people in one go as had been killed in mass killings in the entire previous decade So it's understandable (at the time) that they got a bit hysterical about gun control Even so- its actually `relatively' easy to get a gun liscence here in Oz even today, and I know for a fact that the number of unliscenced guns is still well above the number of liscenced guns- especially in country areas... Almost every farm still has a 22, triple 2 or 12 gauge still `hanging around' You cant buy a m16 or ak47 legally- but why does anyone need one anyway- farmers regard guns as tools- not penis substitutes |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 38882470 04/26/2013 09:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is reason to think the Port Arthur massacre was planned as early 1987 when, after a specially called Premier's meeting in Hobart in December 1987, the New South Wales Labour Premier, Mr. Barry Unsworth stated, "there would be no effective gun control in Australia until there was a massacre in Tasmania" [link to members.iimetro.com.au] |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 38882470 04/26/2013 09:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There's no 'New Town' in Tasmania, it's probably New Norfolk, and why bring Bryant into it? There's a Newtown in Sydney, it's a suburb. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38879495 ![]() [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38879495 I actually missed that- its known as the Port Arthur massacre here - In 1996, armed with two semi-automatic rifles, Martin Bryant killed 35 people around Port Arthur and wounded 21 before being caught by police the next day following an overnight siege. Would either of the us based posters like to show where this info came from in the first place?? |

Where's the conspiracy theorist in you people? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29074157 I'm not pin-hunting, either. Yeah thats why the first reply to your post was from you. Here's a hint anyone with 1/34 a brain knows it is time to stop reading when any thread is replied to first by its author in this manner. SMH |

Thats like saying that Newcastle is in Sydney.... (or for our yank OP) Washington DC to Hagerstown, MD Driving Distance: 75 miles Driving Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes More About Hagerstown Washington, DC to Front Royal, VA Driving Distance: 70 miles Driving Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes More About Front Royal Washington DC to Harpers Ferry, WV Driving Distance: 68 miles Driving Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes More About Harpers Ferry Washington, DC to Gettysburg, PA Driving Distance: 84 miles Driving Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes More About Gettysburg So basically- New Town in tassie is about as far away from Port Arthur as any of those places (I get that from the places names- you can actually drive to 4 different states from your capital city in under 2 hours???) Wow!!! Small states... |
