These people have serious psychological issues, and need help! I know how it feels. My mother was too controlling in some ways, but never anything this bad! Poor girl! She is finally free! I sympathize with parents whose kids are far away - but if you laid a good foundation, you have to let go a bit. Many of my fellow parents considered me lazy because I refused to check if my children did their homework. We never once had a homework battle - and guess what - they did their homework all the time. I have no idea why that worked, but it did. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 |

Many of my fellow parents considered me lazy because I refused to check if my children did their homework. We never once had a homework battle - and guess what - they did their homework all the time. I have no idea why that worked, but it did. It worked because you earned their respect. Instead of just yelling at them to work hard, you probably worked hard yourself. Kids learn by actions more than words. It was the same thing with me and cleaning. My mother never gave me many chores growing up, but she was always cleaning .I was always watching her do it. By the time I reached high school, I had become somewhat of a neat freak myself. She was over-bearing on other things though, like driving. When I first started driving, I was only allowed to drive to school and back. I was a straight A student, and had never given her any problems but it was a control thing. She acted like I was going to drive off and join a cult or something. I remember I had been driving for maybe a month, and I wanted a snack, so I pulled over at a gas station on the way home. When I walked in with the bag, it was a huge deal. Last Edited by Dease on 12/28/2012 03:45 PM "Be strong and courageous. Many of my fellow parents considered me lazy because I refused to check if my children did their homework. We never once had a homework battle - and guess what - they did their homework all the time. I have no idea why that worked, but it did. It works because the child learns to be responsible for his/her work. The result is a sense of ownership and pride in the recognition which is earned. Anything else is a disaster. The parents who call you lazy are robbing their children of a valuable life lesson. The earlier children learn to take over responsibility for themselves- the better. LAZY, pfft. What are they then? I´ll tell you... egocentric. "How will it look, if Johnny doesn´t do his homework?" Parents living vicariously through the achievement of the children which they are "training" to perform to obtain success. These kind of parents land in the same bucket for me as the ones that are wantonly negligent. Both are selfish and self-centered. |
