Muay Thai if you want martial art based on striking. Elbows, knee, leg, fist.

Or Muay Boran, it's the trational form of Muay Thai. It's way more deadly and effective. I trained it for 2 years, still love it.

Or BJJ for the ground work.

best advice i have seen
i train in both muay thai and bjj
i would recommend either one all the other crap like tkd is childs play

and no finding a mma gym is not the way to go. is best to start in one style and get good at it before trying to "mix" it up

heh no it's never too late.

THe best styles out there for progressive MMA draw from kali/arnis and kung fu/kuntao silat. AS for the gey wrestlers I guess you might have to learn some BJJ or smtg for that matter. SOme of the kung fu can help though like tai chi and chinna, eagle claw etc

I agree with this as well.

But if it is simply for hobby, no need for op to become an expert at anything, and getting a diverse base may not be an awful idea. Remember, they are not looking ot compete or anything.

well...

I think a good balance of progressive MMA and traditional art like kung fu might be good. But as for jeet kune do philosophy, a lot of people buy it.. I don't. Some people just dont understand the traditional martial arts... but if you must that's why I said some of the progressive MMA that focuses on kali/arnis etc can give you a good balance for that "intellectual side". Well if anyhting kali/arnis influences progressive MMA can provide good stuff that other traditional styles don't have like how to develop flow, be creative and good sensitivity training practice.

Some poeple start off with a traditional art. My favorite is authentic Chinese Kung fu from a good lineage.

Professional people in particular cannot afford to be injured, sometimes ruining their livelihoods.

I'm nearly 40 thinking of starting too, but I went to see some local club and all the kids there were like 10 :)). I guess it is a very good choice for health and fitness.

Garbage.

And to answer the original question, choose some combination of:

boxing
muay thai
Kyokushin karate
BJJ
Wrestling
Judo
Sambo

If you want self-defence. Because almost everything else is a waste of time.

Re: is 25 too late to learn a martial art?
I recommend Tai Chi for cultivation of chi and meditation. Study with someone in Chen Bing's lineage. They won't make you eat up your time doing BS to prove your worth, the art will do that. Standing post will blow through any blocks you have but only if you are doing it right. Of course doing it right means experiencing terrible discomfort for 30 minutes a day.

I like to pair that with 40 minutes of half lotus seated meditation where you keep the back open like in standing post. Let your eyes focus on a point on a blank wall and concentrate on the feeling of air passing through your nose and keep count.

Bujinkan ninjutsu is good to pair with tai chi because it is immediately effective for combat and it is a complete art.
