What happened to OS/2? | |

The name stands for "Operating System/2," because it was introduced as part of the same generation change release as IBM's "Personal System/2 (PS/2)" line of second-generation personal computers. The first version was released in December 1987 and newer versions were released until December 2001. OS/2 was intended as a protected mode successor of PC-DOS. Notably, basic system calls were modeled after MS-DOS calls; their names even started with "Dos" and it was possible to create "Family Mode" applications: text mode applications that could work on both systems.[1] Because of this heritage, OS/2 shares similarities with Unix, Xenix, and Windows NT in many ways. OS/2 is no longer marketed by IBM, and IBM standard support for OS/2 was discontinued on 31 December 2006.[2]" [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

It was slow and outdated by that time and everybody moaned about it. Support for the OS had ended about 2 years previously at that time so it was kinda worrying that one of the biggest insurance companies in the UK was still using it. At the time i'd only experienced a Windows or Mac OS so when i started the job i was wondering wtf is this OS? |

OS/2-Warp4 was 32-bit architecture, with protected memory areas. No crashing like Win95. Occasionally an app would hang but it would not dump the whole OS. OS/2 even had the best strategy game ever, Galactic Civilizations. . . . --- We all breathe the same air |

OS/2 was a nice OS that had it not been for IBM's fumbling of its development -- we would be using OS/2 right now. OS/2 is one of few wonderful OSes that have been destroyed by sheer stupidity or complacency: OS/2 BEOS AMIGAOS VAX/VMS |
