He was never an abolishionist, in fact he was a open racist, but he was losing support in the North for his scorched Earth war against the South, and the only large block of support he could find for continuing the war was the Northern Abolishionists. Furthermore, when Lincoln was a young man, he took a trip down the Mississippi River where he saw a slave shackled in irons. It shocked him so badly that he made an oath to himself that if he ever had the ability he would hit slavery "hard." Lincoln also realized that he couldn't get the support he needed to fight the war in the early years if he had argued that it was to free the slaves. So he made another argument he also firmly believed in which was that the nation could not be involuntarily dissolved like so many Balkan states. The North accepted that argument and provided the support he needed. The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't just to please the North which was somewhat divided on slavery. It was to please England and France, who were torn as to whom they should support: the North or the South. Author, inventor, disorganizer. Let's disorganize the American Cancer Society. |
