Re: How To Stay Motivated And Avoid Procrastination
I have had many decades of experience with this. The problem is not psychological, but physical/chemical, having to do with brain chemistry. Exercise helps, as I found out in college. Also, an overlooked factor is thyroid function. Those who are borderline hypothyroid have a hard time getting things done. The Irish tend to have more of a problem with this than others. What to do? 1. Take a supplement with iodine in it, such as Sea-Vegg. 2. Avoid any drink containing fluoride in the water, since fluoride competes with iodine and blocks iodine uptake by the thyroid gland.3. Do not eat bread made with flour that is brominated, as bromine, another halogen, blocks iodine uptake. Pepperidge Farm breads are supposedly made with flour that is not brominated. 4. Do not drink tap water that has been chlorinated, but use water that has gone through an activated carbon filter or a reverse osmosis filter. 5. Do not rely on current medical tests to diagnose low thyroid; alternative medicine doctors who have spent years studying this say that the best test is body temperature. If if is much lower than 98.6°, your "body furnace" is not hot enough, and this is determined by thyroid activity. 6. Another test, as well as a treatment: before bedtime, smear tincture of iodine on your abdomen to make a big stain. If it is gone by morning, your body is hungry for iodine, and absorbs it rapidly. If not, iodine status is probably normal.

I too suffer from both of these, apparently fairly common in the entrepreneur community. I also have been prone to "Shiny Object Syndrome", which I believe is an offshoot of the focus (or lack thereof) issue.

I'm presently trying NLP, Brain Wave Entrainment, Self-Hypnosis and using some tools (such as a free app called Focus Booster V1.2).

All I know is that it SUCKS...

These sound interesting!!! How long have you tried them and do you see an improvement?

Yes and No.

Been using various things for the last 18 months or so.

Some have helped more than others...

Re: How To Stay Motivated And Avoid Procrastination
I have recently been pulling myself out of a procrastination phase. Being on unemployment for 9 months will kill your spirit!

My best advice: BREATHE! Controlling and regulating your breathing is the way for me to focus and get the Oxygen my body need!

I also use Theta Wave guided meditation to energize my body and mind to get done what needs to be done.

I removed all 24-hr "news"(fear) channels from my tv. No more of that cap for me!

I purchased a Magic Bullet and make myself fruit/oat/ginger/kale smoothies every day.

I run every day.(gonna run my first Warrior Dash in May, 5 days before I turn 40)

I sent negative people packing.

Through all this, I've even managed to forgive my ex-wife and can carry on civil conversations with her. (Freaks her out!)

Good luck, OP. lots of great advice here!

This is an excellent post!!! Thank you so much!!! I am going to try number 6 right away. I've had a feeling for awhile now that my thyroid has contributed to how awful I currently feel.

I avoid tap water like the plague. I buy the pepperidge farms cookies and crackers they taste way better than the others and I noticed they do have far better ingredients. I didn't know there was pepperidge farms brand bread.

Your post is funny but packed with soooo much truth. I still have a few negative people I need to send packing in my life too lol

I have a Jack Lalane but I want to get the Magic Bullet aswell at some point.

"I removed all 24-hr "news"(fear) channels from my tv. No more of that cap for me!"

That is a necessity that I am starting to realize more and more each day. I'm going to either limit my news exposure or cut it off entirely. I feel better when I don't have anything to do with it.

"I also use Theta Wave guided meditation to energize my body and mind to get done what needs to be done."

I'm very interested in this but have never tried it. I listen to nature sounds and love native american and celtic music. Which ones do you use? How long have you done it for and how has it benefited you? Sorry for so many questions but I really don't know much about this but I would like to try it.

Do you use any specific breathing techniques?

I would love to get back to running daily! I felt 10 times better! But I was also in much better health before I started.

Re: How To Stay Motivated And Avoid Procrastination
Hey Op,

I know how you feel. I am a full time web development freelancer and the one issue that I face more than anything else is procrastination. The problem lies with both distraction and avoidance.

Usually the distraction fuels the avoidance to some degree but the avoidance comes for many reasons. Maybe the task at hand seems far too daunting or big. Possibly you don't think that you have the gusto/skill to actually do the task at hand and end up stressing about it.

Stress is what fuels avoidance. The distractions like TV, social networking, and even cleaning your house are ways for you to avoid said stress even if the way you are avoiding it is unhealthy to the progress you are trying to make.

Some Tips:

1. Make a longer list of small things.

I know someone said make a smaller list earlier and I half agree with him/her. I do believe you need to cut out a lot of in between but do break the important big chunks into more manageable bites. This will allow you to accomplish a micro task quickly and give you a boost of accomplishment.

2. Get away from distractions

Go to a coffee shop if you can or at least turn off your tv and close any distractive tabs in your browser. Turn your phone on silent if you have to.

3. Finish Tasks First, Play Later

If you finish a certain number of tasks, reward yourself. This work towards reward system works well for most people. Reward yourself with a snack, some social time (30 min or something), or if it is a big goal then a night out. At the end of the day you will thank yourself.

4. Take breaks

This was the hardest for me to realize but taking breaks is proven to boost productivity. You don't want to get burnt out on the task at hand.

5. Log your time.

By doing this you will know how long it takes approximately to finish a task. This will allow you to build better lists in the future :)

6. Get some rest

Sleeping is necessary. Don't overwork yourself or you are doing yourself some injustice. You need energy to stay focused and alert.

7. Eat well

The way you eat will affect your mood, energy levels, and even the way you think. Don't go out and pound down an energy drink or soda expecting to stay awake for eight hours doing work. It will only to serve a nasty sugar crash directly to your brains door step. Drink some black tea, a LOT of water, and maybe a small cup of coffee if it is a must.

8. Organize yourself.

This means actually writing your list, noting any calls you need to make, working around your daily schedule but most importantly it means a clean and clutter free space. As humans we stress in an environment that we find uncomfortable and will not work efficiently nor happily. Make stuff easier for yourself and put stuff in easy to access areas, clean that space up and clear the clutter.

9. Don't Re-invent the wheel!

Unless your job is inventor and you are coming up with new gadgets, there are tools out there to help you. If you are a writer, web developer, or other you can find great online tools. Even if you are a cook, baker, tanner, etc there are great online resources and tutorials out there for you. Make your work life as easy as possible. Your work isn't a proving ground for anothers scrutiny but a place for you to craft your best and provide the best possible product or service. Why not make it easy on yourself? :)

10. FORM GOOD HABITS

It is all and well to say that this list is good and you will do them but actually acting upon them and/or remembering them is the hardest. Actually try to put each item into your daily work routine to easily integrate it. Habits are the hardest things to form but also the hardest to break. Take time to strengthen a good habit.

If you find this list useful, throw me some karma points or something ;)

Damn you are right :-( It is far worse.

I think the only way things will improve is if individuals become self sufficient. If we grow food instead of lawns. I have tried well water and I love it it was so clean it was like drinking air.

Also, for people to DIY as many things as they can. It was a great time back then in 20's when people crafted things out of pride and now we shell out plastic junk and machines are making it so they need to employ less and less people over time.

I'm not fond of this day and age of consumerism and waste. That's why I look back at old photos and films and have a sense of loss and longing admiring a time when things and people were so much more meaningful.

I know a lot of you guys think exercise is the key but to be honest I can't even load and unload the dishwasher without breaking a sweat and feeling dizzy and having blurred vision. Whatever is going on I want to beat this thing! Anyone else feel this exhausted? Where simple things have turned into a struggle?
 Quoting: _Obsidian_

I could have written every single one of your posts here! Wow... thought it was just me. It just seemed to happen to me and I can't even pinpoint when it began. It's a vicious cycle really because I'm not intentionally being lazy but when I try to do anything I literally get dizzy and overwhelmed then end up crying and depressed and trying to explain to my husband and kids that I'm not being lazy. The more depressed I get about it all, the less energy I have to do things.

I've been researching and reading so much stuff but to what end? I love researching and reading but it doesn't really lead me anywhere in particular... just to more research and reading. I don't watch much TV because most of it is quite repetitive and boring but the internet is endless with what I can read, research and learn.

I've made a plan of action to start 2013 and really, really hope I can stick with it. I'd already started walking my dog once a day for about 20 minutes (my husband usually does the dog walking). I was hoping that getting outside and getting my body moving would maybe help kickstart me back to who I really am. I got ill - really bad cold, chesty cough, aches and pains and no energy to walk the dog. I'm starting his walks again on the 1st day of 2013 - I will not let this beat me.

I was looking at the detox thread here, last night, and plan to do some of the tips mentioned there. Nothing too drastic at first but hopefully it will help. I've been listening to positive guided meditations as I go to sleep at night.

I often get angry with myself and just want to snap out of it but I know it's not that simple. Maybe those of us that feel this way can use this thread to help each other along?

I don't hear voices O.o

I think that a lot of mental conditions are simply vitamin deficiencies and traumas also built up negative emotions. Way back when people actually died from Scurvy. Also, I'm under the impression that a lack of Vitamin D is the cause or at least creates an environment where tuberculosis thrives. Look for a natural cause before jumping in to the far out causes guys!! We don't want to all be afraid of our own shadows.

Also, lead cups. Everyone drank out of them and everyone went nuts. No conspiracy there just lack of knowledge on humanities part.

Quote from article
"Pull is about activities and meaningful quests that, by their very existence, inspire action in the name of coming closer to the object of the quest. And the beautiful thing about setting pull-oriented motivational drivers is that they can be long-term, they can have intermediate benchmarks that serve our emotional need for intermittent reinforcement. And, once completed, they can either expand to create a new source of pull to an even cooler place. Or a new quest with an even stronger sense of pull that builds around the foundation of habits and actions laid in the prior quest can be set in motion."

I want to elaborate upon my other response. I think that what you suggest is very much a possibility. I have seen videos where the riot police use "sound weapons" I just discouraged focusing on it in my other reply because I think it can be damaging for average folks to consume themselves with those type of thoughts which often happens people wind up addicted. It is good to be aware but not to the point that it affects your life in a negative way. I'm not saying that this is the case for you I'm just throwing it out there as an air of caution for people.

Try motivational music guys!!!! Videos and songs for concentration especially Classical.

Keep them on low as background music. It helps me!
