Quoting: scorpio66 I like the tip about the solar lights, that's a new one to me - great idea! Thanks! a few years ago my power went out for several days and on day two I was sitting outside at night and looked at all the lights we had along our walk way and flower beds etc... Needless to say the walk way was pretty dark for the remainder of the outage but my house wasnt :) lol I am a HelpTard, need Help? Ask me! Peace Means Reloading Your Guns! I live in a fairly large apartment building so if the heat goes my options are limited. The shower curtain idea was pretty good. I am on a very limited budget but try to keep stuff on hand. I use empty containers for water, as you've mentioned..very important. I don't have a lot of food items but I always have a big bag of rice and dry beans, cheap and have a long shelf life. I do a whole lot of walking and do dress in layers, after the first few miles I don't feel the cold that much LOL. I don't always have a metro card so I have to walk to my appts. at least it helps to keep me in shape which I think is really important. I don't want to be unable to walk a distance or have zero endurance if for any reason I have to get up and go. ..."The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Last winter was non existent for the most part here... so my preps from last year are mostly intact... so that helped out a whole lot! :) if you do one thing to prep, etc it ups your chances of survival/comfort :) Walking is good, I try to walk at least a mile a day... but aim for 5 when i can :) stay warm friend! Especially if they are not used to having winter storms :) Quoting: Blue Skies thank ye There hasnt been an epic winter storm here since 1993 we got 3 feet at my place... We was out of power a month! We had a Ice storm in 08 that messed the area up... literally looked like tornado damage to the trees... what the wind didn't do in... the weight of the ice did! power was out about a week... but still wasnt anything like the 93 storm... so the newer generation around here doesnt really know the extent of what could happen... and the ones who do... are doubting... lol last winter was hardly a winter... but damn its been cold this year and already had more snow here... than we did all last winter. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1430199 5 years is quite a bit of wood! One easy fire starter is a brillow pad and a 9 volt battery and toilet paper. Obviously you need some sticks and wood gathered before hand. But its as easy as having a lighter. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 31150376 12/30/2012 06:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My master bedroom/bath receives very little heat from our wood burning heat-a-lator fireplace in the living room. I decided to use one of my crockpots...filled it with river rocks and topped with a pyrex bowl of water...turned on low, it makes our end of the house PERFECT during the cold nights! The water adds just the right ammount of moisture, too! |

| allisaTX User ID: 25379369 12/30/2012 06:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is my first winter in Michigan from the south. I'm relying on a gas fireplace for heat if the electricity goes out. Is that ok? Forgive me if it is a dumb question. I just don't foresee an event in this little town that would take out the gas. Thanks OP this is a great thread. It reminds me of the "safe use of a generator" thread around the time of Sandy. |

Sometimes their are surges when the power comes back on. If you have you own grid tied power generation, disconnect it so you don't shock a linesman! Make sure your pipes are well insulated, you don't want a leak on top of everything else. If you have forgotten something in your preps, write it down and get it asap, so you don't suffer next time. Keep the kettle full at all times, and keep up with dish and clothes washing. |

Michigan.... i spent some time there... gets kinda cold lol Im from the south too... Kentucky... hotter than hell and colder than hell I'm a its never enough type of guy... back ups upon back ups lol But you would be better off than most. I got an family member who didnt have any back up heat at all until a few years ago... and their back up is a gas fireplace... that person said it was a godsend! no more cold winters during power outages. if you followed some of the tips here and used ur fireplace with caution... you should come out just fine :) I am a HelpTard, need Help? Grew up with wood heat. Only been the last few years that I haven't had it. I'm looking to purchase a small house in a mountain town and it comes with 3 wood stoves and a shed full of cut and stacked logs. I love every part of wood head. Cutting wood, splitting wood, stacking wood...great exercise. And nothing better than that feeling of radiant heat. A buddy of mine cooked his Thanksgiving turkey on the wood stove...came out bon apetit! |

Yeah, it's a lot of work but in an emergency, when the power goes out they are really nice to have. I have friends in northern Idaho that have about 3 wood burning stoves in their home. They have a real big one you can cook on also. |
