Hmm. Nice advice but the kerosene heater part is completly wrong, you need to burn the wick every couple of weeks or so to keep it fuel efficient. That means letting it burn until the fuel is completely gone and after it goes out re light it a few times.
Here is a great link to everything you need to know about kero

[link to www.milesstair.com]
 Quoting: . 21704402

No it isnt wrong... says so on my heater... do not let it burn empty... it will burn up the wick... no fuel means a dry wick... that means the wick will burn up and be destroyed

You a wick maker?
 Quoting: Dr. Acula

YOU my friend are correct!!

I live for years in my youth with only kerosene heaters for heat. You NEVER let them run out of fuel.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15256858

My two cents on this topic.

Burning Kero fuel leaves a tar build up on the wick.
Burning the heater empty (outside) removes/burns the tar buildup.
Most say dont burn dry, to avoid the strong burning tar smell.

The wicks i know are always a fiberglass thread construction and will not be damaged by lack of fuel.

Don't leave it on 24x7. 4 hours on & 4 hours off will keep the fridge cold & save gas.

Check the oil frequently.

It stays OUTSIDE!! Not in the garage. NOT in the Bathroom with the window open. Carbon Monoxide may kill more than Sandy Did.

If you are worried about generator theft, chain it up. Guard It. Turn it off for 4 hours to sleep.

A generator, in an attached Garage will kill you in your sleep.

Never use a generator indoors! Not trying to be funny but some people have died as a result of this and/or sticking them in their garage.

Speaking of Johhny Depp, he bought his mother a horse farm on veersailes rd in lexington ky, right past the airport. Has a sign out front, Betty Sues Farm. I sealed the driveway is how I know.

Re: Dr. Acula and Friends: Emergency Winter Prep Tips!!! (411)

(This OP has been updated several times and will continue to be updated as info comes in... Figured I would just add several tips to the OP to have it all in one spot...)

I can recommend a hot water bottle --

[link to www.amazon.com]

Each of our family members has one. It can make
going to sleep in the cold easy since otherwise,
it seems, shivering will keep you awake for hours.

I use them camping also and boil water up on my
Coleman one burner stove --

[link to www.amazon.com]

-- you can use the hot water bottles for sitting
around, or toss them in bed as a bedwarmer prior
to going to sleep also. They make great gifts, are
low tech, but extremely effective. Children love
them also, but make sure they are not as hot or
covered with an old t-shirt or water bottle cover
for them.

Of course, LOTS of hot cocoa makes you feel better too.

[link to www.amazon.com]

One other important consideration is that using a toilet
inside during power outage can get smelly very quickly.
We have "luggable loos" and use them out in the garage
where we will not have to live with the serious stink after
about 3 days of no power.

here are some good options. I got the luggable loo lid
and put it on a bucket higher than a 5 gallon bucket. I
found them at the recycling center for free --

[link to www.amazon.com]

Thanks for sharing so many other great ideas too.

Hot water bottles are just wonderful but let me give some of you a warning about them.

When I lived in Arkansas......I would put them in the bed and when I would get up in the morning they would still be warm and toasty......elevation about 300 feet.

But then I moved out to Albuquerque, NM (elevation 5300 feet) and let me tell you that those HOT water bottles turned into ICE water bottles before dawn.

It has to do with the elevation and the humidity.

So......just be aware of that.

Re: Dr. Acula and Friends: Emergency Winter Prep Tips!!! (411)
I also have this recipe I got from the rense site which linked me to this...

Modified Garlic Soup Recipe

Serves 4
26 garlic cloves (unpeeled)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) organic butter (grass fed)
1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
1/2 cup fresh ginger
2 1/4 cups sliced onions
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
26 garlic cloves, peeled
1/2 cup coconut milk
3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth
4 lemon wedges
Preheat oven to 350F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.
Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add vegetable broth; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; add coconut milk and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavour.
Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve.
Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

I have something to share.

I slipped on a rock and my feet plunged into an icy stream today doing some trail running it was 22 degrees F out.

Next time, take off your socks and shoes, walk through the stream barefoot, then dry your feet off with your sweater or gloves on the other side.

Don't go across with shoes on and risk plunging your whole shoe and socks into the icy river.

By the time I got back, my socks were frozen stiff along with shoelaces.

Hey Doc, I was just taking the trash out to the road and almost slipped on a patch of ice, and I remembered an old trick for making ice walking boots, get some sheet-metal "zip" screws and put a dozen on each boots tread, and you can walk on ice without slipping and busting your tailbone.

well where i live the power goes out every winter... trees fall on the power lines, etc and i can be without power for over a week no problem... so i learned to prep for when that happens...

i wanted to share what i learned.

also a few inches of snow makes the roads here a death trap... very steep hills... very curvy small roads... if you arent careful its a 20 mile death trip...

when they call off school they dont maintain the roads or plow them or salt them... instead of being a rebel and headed out and risking my life... i prep so when it does happen... i got what i need and can sit at home safe and sound

:)
