China knows America has one last opportunity to intervene in the Pacific before the time comes where they too will be in a position of military power insomuch to allow them to project power in the way we, America, do.

The Korean Peninsula is just another square on the big map. China uses North Korea as a buffer zone and a useful idiot in the sense it can use it for both aggression and distance, as it is now.

America has the decision to make of take out the buffer zone and overtly start the final steps until the ultimate war down the road, or do nothing, placate North Korea longer and allow China to further beef up, project power, and ultimately unite Korea, only under a Chinese flag, a reunification of the Middle Kingdom if you will.

I know the decision I would make. It will cost lives in the present yes, but more than likely save scores in the future.

shucks, don't make me blush MM. ha.

Seriously though, you are right, now is the last opportunity to even get another toe hold in the region before the ultimate conflict comes.

Honestly, when I think of Obama's reaction i get the urge to go fishing. Reason being, Obama's reaction and policy has resembled a worm so much that I could probably catch a trout first cast.

North Korea is being played puppet that is true. Politics and family backgrounds of leaders in the region only inflame the situation to unprecedented levels that leave the real decision makers and think tankers to have to step outside of tradition contingency plans and response models.

Relative strengths of North Korean military:
a) Large numbers of troops and fact that at least 20% of adult population has military training
b) Widespread deployment of chemical weapons, particularly among the large force of artillery
c) Nuclear capability
d) Ideological loyalty of large portion of military and civilian population (“brainwashed”)
e) Extensive prepared defensive positions
f) Mountainous terrain to slow advance of enemy ground troops
h) Ability to maintain a degree of military secrecy
i) Massive stockpiles and ability to locally produce basic military needs such as bullets and rifles

Just a quick reminder:

China tells army to prepare for war in 2013

[link to www.phayul.com]

<snip>

"In new military directives issued by the Chinese government for the year 2013, the largest army in the world has been told to prepare for war and bolster its ability to win a battle based on rigorous training on an actual combat basis."

The current situation with the DPRK is nothing more than a means to an end. The battle plan was drawn up and the players were maneuvered into place. Sonny Booboo might think he's playing the good soldier now but he's going to find out that he's not any smarter than his dad was.

Kerry has been in South Korea for 4 hours...

SEOUL, South Korea — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in South Korea on Friday on an unusual diplomatic journey, traveling directly into a region bracing for a possible North Korean missile test and risking that his presence alone could spur Pyongyang into another headline-seeking provocation.

Kerry was kicking off four days of talks in East Asia amid speculation that the North's unpredictable regime would launch a midrange missile designed to reach as far as the U.S. territory of Guam. Kerry also planned to visit China and Japan.

Meanwhile...more bad news from Syria

AFP West has "hard evidence" of Syria chemical weapons

Western nations have "hard evidence" that chemical weapons have been used at least once in the Syrian war but a UN investigation is now unlikely to get into the country, diplomats said Thursday.

President Bashar al-Assad's government asked the UN to investigate its claims against rebel forces. But it is now refusing to let international experts into the country because the UN wants to look into claims against Assad's forces.

[link to now.mmedia.me (secure)]

Washington Post - Sectarian strife will persist in Syria after Assad’s fall, top U.S. intelligence official says

Sectarian violence is likely to continue in Syria long after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad as divisions among opposition groups deepen, the Obama administration’s top intelligence official said Thursday.

The most likely scenario that we see, even after Assad falls, is probably more fractionalization, if I can use that word, both geographically and on a sectarian basis, for some period of time for at least a year, a year and a half,” Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. told the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Clapper said Islamist extremist groups within the opposition remain powerful far beyond their actual numbers and “have a presence in 13 of the 14 provinces in Syria.”

“Their numbers themselves are not indicative of their real influence,” he said.

Asked to quantify the likelihood that the United States and its allies would be able to secure Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal if Assad falls, Clapper declined. “I’m not sure I know how to make a call like that,” he said, adding without elaboration that it “would be very, very situationally dependent.”
