Someone just took one bag out of my garbage...

We were on vacation last week (missed trash pick-up); so last night be took 4 full cans to the curb.

Just before 6am a truck stopped in front of our neighbor's house. A man got out & walked to our trash cans. He selected one of the middle cans. He carefully removed the top 3 or 4 bags from the can (all of the cans are overfilled). Then he took one bag out & replaced the top bags.

He took the one selected bag, put it in the back of his truck, and left.

It was half-dark, so I didn't really see him or the truck that clearly. He was tall & thin, wearing a tan jacket, and he was wearing gloves...

When he was doing it; I thought maybe he was adding his garbage to our garbage "the old dump & run". I wasn't watching closely when he first got out of the truck... BUT he clearly took a bag (one of our bags) with him...

Why did he do it & what should I do? It would sound crazy if I sent a letter to Sen. Mikulski, right? I'm not sure what I should do...

Geez, Darby, I hope the guys have some ideas, 'cause I sure don't. This is straight out of an NCIS episode or something. I don't know if there is much you can do. Once it's on the street, it's fair game. I thought that was fiction, after seeing it on tv, so I asked an LE friend about it. I guess it's true.

Be careful, kiddo. Stay aware of things in your house and around you. Don't be paranoid, just be more aware of your surroundings. Kind of like we had to be when we were stationed in Europe. I don't think this will help much, but it's all I've got. Sorry, hon.

Do you shred your papers that have important info on them? I recall hearing on the local news that some identity thieves will target well to do neighborhoods that way.

Then again, it is also an investigative tool. Maybe something you did or said pushed the wrong buttons?

Either way there isn't much you can do about it. (as far as I know)

yeah I don't know what to make of that myself, in my neighborhood that type of behavior usually gets someone beat up or shot (yeah I live in an inner city) I thought stuff like that was on a movie or yeah an NCIS episode.

I would just be careful to be sure to shred any items that may have personal info on it.

US Patriot missile battery crews arrive in Turkey

A group of 27 US troops has arrived in Turkey to operate NATO Patriot surface-to-air (SAM) missile batteries. At least six of those will be deployed along the country’s border with Syria.
The troops arrived in the southeastern province of Gaziantep on Thursday and were taken to a local hotel by Turkish security forces, local media reported.
Their first task will be to survey the sites where the Patriot missiles are to be deployed, after they are fully delivered.

This would be my concern, Darby.

Whether looking for information leading to identity theft, or for some investigative purpose, this is a very old, tried & true process. It's the fact that bags were removed, a single bag taken, and the balance of the bags replaced tat raises a flag - unless this person actually WITNESSED something specific being bagged and placed in the can.

The courts, however, have ruled many times over that garbage placed at the curb is treated as abandoned or otherwise discarded property, and relinquishes any expectation of privacy.

I set our can out only on the morning of trash pick-up (today, for example). While this is still no absolute guarantee, it dramatically shortens the window of opportunity for trash-sifters, and removes their opportunity of creeping in under cover of darkness.

On the other hand - maybe he was gathering fuel for his reactor powering his Flux Capacitor!

Darby, I have had the same happen to me, during a lawsuit. I yelled and they put it back. I hope you can get a trace on the model vehicle and report the theft. Perhaps the detective can find the car on one of the traffic cameras.

Maybe take the time to check your 6 very often...when driving take the time to look very often in rearview mirror...look for patterns of vehicles...distance of vehicles..obviously same car but look for patterns, distance lane changes several cars back and in front....take different routes home and to work....

Even though tracking systems are the way to go old school tricks will bring your overall awareness up...

I'd spend a little time brushing up on my situational awareness...Lots of stuff in your trash from receipts to CC numbers to DNA. They look for bags with papers vs. potato peelings so he may have been sizing up the best bag to take for the best haul of information. When I worked in the field if we knew that once the subject took out their trash and were not likely to see it again ie: an alley or were leaving for work...we would just dump all the cans into a pickup truck and then sort through the trash taking our time. You can develop quite a profile on someone from what they throw in their trash. Receipts, documents, bills, prescription bottles, stems and seeds etc....

Iran FM to visit Cairo for talks on ties, Syria: report

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi will visit Egypt next week for talks on bilateral ties and the crisis in Syria, the ISNA news agency reported Saturday quoting an Iranian diplomat.

Salehi will meet with his counterpart Mohammed Kamel Amr and President Mohamed Morsi during his two-day visit which begins on January 9, said Mojtaba Amani, the head of Tehran's interests section in Cairo.

Salehi is expected to discuss "bilateral issues, the issue of Syria as well as other regional and international matters" with Egyptian officials, Amani said.

Hi Darby, first lets come at this problem backwards.

What was special about that trash can?

Was this trash can used after you got back from vacation while the others were full before you went on vacation? (which means someone may have been in your garage)

Do you use trash liners in your home office?

Does any of your "normal" trash (kitchen) get mixed in with Office trash?

Go and look at the trash cans and see if they have been "marked".

Do you use the same size trash liner on every trash container in the house?

How full was the bag the guy took? (on trash day around here, I walk around filling up a trash bag with all the little trash containers in the house)

Just some questions to consider.

BUT the first thing you might consider is locking down your credit. Get the most expensive package, better safe then... well you know.

Next: how easy is it to get into your garage? Can you get into your garage from an outside door?

Take a piece of wood, match stick, anything will do, and place it in the door jab, really low next to the hinges, when if falls it will fall, unseen. And, guess what you will know.

If you are really worried that this is a "problem" load up all your trash cans with worthless junk, real trash sorted like office trash, kitchen trash etc, and put all four cans out. Number or mark each bag, then in the morning do a "Audit" and see if something is missing. Then if you would like to continue and find out who this is you might consider one of these:

Install and record to your computer. Place camera so that you could get a shot of the licence plate and a clear shot of the dude stealing your trash.
