I'm feeling kinda dumb, but how do we know these are their actual twitter accounts? Can't anyone make a twitter account with any name?

Yes - there are parody & fake accounts on twitter....The GNC President & GNC PM both had people set up fake twitter accounts in their names (Zeidan & Magariaf)

Anyone could pretend to be Rami el-Obeidi & Noman Bentoman...

BUT - I've followed these specific accounts for over a year. I've seen them interact w/ prominent Midddle East journalists and then comments they've made have appeared in print. E.g. Rami often interacts w/ Rana Jawad from BBC & Jomana Kardesh from CNN.

I've seen both men interact w/ prominent Libyan politicians. Rami has provided updates on breaking news in Libya that could only come from someone in the know. When there is a crisis, other prominent tweeters ask him for information.

Noman often links to articles from his employer Chatham House - if he was fake wouldn't they shut account down?

Most telling, the Libyan English language twitter community is rather small. They "out" the fake accounts quickly. These are the twitter accounts of Rami el-Obeidi & Noman Benotman...

What's been sad to watch is all the cases in which members of the Libyan twitter community have been injured/killed. It's so common, it must be intentional. You've followed someone for a year who is just a catchy name & a flag (or other symbol); then you hear they are in jail (or dead) and you finally see their face. That's been difficult (and I have no connection to Libya other than twitter "friends"). Anyway, I feel confident that the tweeters I follow from Libya are legit...

No problem... It took me a good six months to figure who the legitimate Libyan tweeters were... And I still fall for Libyan rumors (they are rumors spread by Libyans but still BS)...

Sounds like someone used your garbage as a drop-off point. It would be pretty easy to place something in an unlocked can in a bag and describe this to another for later pickup. Since he stopped in front of the neighbor's house, he was probably checking house numbers and pulled over when he was close.

Never thought of using a garbage can that way before, but it's not difficult to imagine. It would also avoid normal suspicions. Garbage bags are one of the very few containers that aren't locked down these days.

Unfortunate or not, these are the facts. It is what it is!

German Patriot missiles arrive in Turkey

A German cargo ship carrying components of the Patriot surface-to-air missile defense system has docked in the Turkish Mediterranean port of Iskenderun, Anadolu news agency reported. The German missiles are expected to be deployed to the southern Kahramanmaras province by the start of February to defend Turkey's border with Syria. The Netherlands and the US have also each deployed two batteries to protect other stretches of the 900-kilometer frontier. A day earlier, 240 German troops landed in Turkey as part of a NATO mission aimed at preventing the Syrian conflict from spilling across the border.

When he was doing it; I thought maybe he was adding his garbage to our garbage "the old dump & run". I wasn't watching closely when he first got out of the truck... BUT he clearly took a bag (one of our bags) with him...

Little clean up

Power is out in Damascus and south and Russia is evacuating. If anyone cared, this could be something, but I think we are all numb from the lack of action so far.

Numb is a good description. We are approaching 2 years since this all started in Syria. Still not sure if we are going to see some climatic event (Western intervention, FSA victories in Damascus and Latika, Assad assassination, coup, etc) that brings this all to an end or a continuing conflict which further grinds Syria into the failed state category.

A senior executive at BP, who lived in London, was among those who died in the attack on the Algerian gas plant, adding to suggestions that the terrorists may have had inside information.

Carlos Estrada, who had worked for the company for 18 years and risen to be vice–president, lived with his wife and family in an exclusive flat in Chelsea, West London.
