North Korea: What happens if Kim Jong-un acts on his threats?
In the event that the 'bellicose rhetoric' of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un turns into something more serious, the opening hours of conflict could be 'pretty ugly,' defense analysts warn.

One of the scenarios that most concerns US defense analysts, for example, involves North Korea’s estimated 500,000 to 700,000 rounds of artillery aimed at Seoul, says retired Brig. Gen. Russell Howard, former commander of the 1st Special Forces Group, which has an Asia focus.
Should Kim decide to begin firing them, he says, “in the first few hours of the conflict, it would be pretty ugly.”
At the same time, North Korea could begin “swarming” its sizable contingent of 600,000 Special Operations commandos, adds Mr. Howard, now the director of the Terrorism, Research, and Education Program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
The “sole purpose” of this group, he adds “is to infiltrate the South and create havoc.”
The realistic goal of the North Korean military would likely be to get some 150,000 of them over the border, where they would “go for infrastructure,” such as communications and transportation systems.

Oh really?

[link to english.chosun.com]
When the North sank the Navy corvette Cheonan in March 2010, then-commander of the U.S. Forces Korea Walter Sharp expressed concerns that South Koreans working in Kaesong could be held hostage in case the conflict escalated. He told a high-ranking South Korean government official that he had trouble sleeping because of the Kaesong issue, and that withdrawing South Koreans from Kaesong should be considered.

South Korean and U.S. forces carried out joint simulated training to rescue people from Kaesong during an annual military exercise in August 2010.

Yeah I'm sure they train for that scenario for nothing... RETARD.

The real hotspot today, right now where people are dying by the dozens every day is NW Africa. There is no where on this globe that more people are being killed, tortured and kidnapped every single day.
 Quoting: Gerry52

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. NW Africa is a real mess, a real humanitarian crisis no doubt. But in terms of potential catastrophic global impact - NW Africa pales in comparison to what is going on over on the Korean peninsula.

While I believe the chances for a full blown conventional or unconventional war in the Korean peninsula region are relatively slim, if things go "hot" the humanitarian crisis will quickly surpass anything going on in NW Africa. The artillery shelling along the DMZ alone will cause hundreds of thousands of casualities. And the financial impacts - yowzer. South Korea is the 15th largest economy in the world. Seoul (about an hours drive from the DMZ and in range of long range fixed NK arty) is the world's 11th largest metropolitan area. US and China would likely mobilize which would create further instability in the markets.

Again, NW Africa is a real bad place to be. But IMO it has just about reached its zenith in terms of how bad things are going to get. As far as Korea goes - we are talking potential destructive impact unlike we have seen since WWII.

China and Russia know that any American Operation in North Korea would absolutely cause a stand down in posture towards Syria and Iran as Obama would absolutely not get involved in multiple major operations as that.

As you stated previously, China gives any North Korean action the green or red light. It's why I believe they are going to allow this to take place. North Korea may fall, but that was only an eventuality anyway. What's important to them is that Syria, Iran, Hezbollah and various other militant Islamic factions sympathetic to their cause will stay in power and allow both Nations the needed venues to build piping systems and continue to use up the resources for themselves. What I mean in sumnation is that they are throwing one group to the fire in order to save their asses in a much more strategic region. And lets be honest, when China decides it is going to enter the "Break-Out" Stage of their empire building plan, North Korea and South Korea could fall to them overnight if they so chose to see it through.

America's Power in the Pacific is waning. If we do not handle this properly our falling out of grace in the Region may rapidly increase.

The question is, where are their subs.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7879907

yes, however if you think about it Gerry it makes sense. America's politicians will be given the opportunity to save face and look good at home during elections because they were 'war hawks' when it came to Nkorea. However, in reality will be, as a nation, taking a step back, or a rapprochement if you will, from the Middle East. We have been fighting and dieing in the ME for over a decade now and Nkorea gives America the opportunity to evaporate from the region while keeping the sheep in America under the illusion of invincibility.

Nkorea is the golden goose. gives us the chance to look good, aka saving face, while in reality bowing out of the shit storm in the ME, giving us the chance to focus our resources in Africa and Asia where shit really matters.

Possible, but I have a feeling that the US doesn't want another war, anywhere. We really are tired of war...well, most of us. It's all going to depend on how Obama decides to react. As we have seen, he gets what he wants. Is NK going to be a fly in his ointment and his orders will be...'just make the problem go away. I don't really care how you do it, just make it go away'. After all he is trying to figure out how to get our guns away from us right now and this NK problem is just a big distraction on his plate. If he does take the gloves off and turn it over to the military NK will become the proving ground for all kinds of new military toys. And, it's not like were going to have many western reporters in NK to record what goes on and who is going to believe anything put out by NK based upon their track record of reporting the truth.

yes, however if you think about it Gerry it makes sense.

And, it's not like were going to have many western reporters in NK to record what goes on and who is going to believe anything put out by NK based upon their track record of reporting the truth.

exactly. I'm not one to belive in false flags... but, an "emp, or nuke strike" in america blamed on Nkorea would be a great way to say lets take away everything.

You are right... Nkorea is a closed state.. who's to say that this isn't all b/s to get people riled up and distracted. just saying.

This administration more than any in the past has been very good at slight of hand. If this is all a distraction then I feel really foolish and dooped..
