Thx, Swin. I saw your question on one of the explosion threads about the drought. I was flying between them and the weather thread, so I could let Cowgirl know what was happening in West. I'm not anywhere near the explosion. It was confusing for a bit. The town's name is West, but it's in Central Texas. I live in the region west Texas. AND...the whole state has been in a 2 year drought. Does that help?

It does -- missed the comma between West and Texas. Probably the only places in Texas I could locate on a map would be Houston and San Antonio. Glad you're nowhere near.

Unusually High Number of Navy Jets Scrambling In San Diego
I live on Coronado Island (im not military) and hear the jets taking off and landing every single day from the carriers stationed here as well as from North Island NAS, all of which are within one mile from my home.

But i kid you not when I say that I have NEVER heard this much activity this late at night. Jets (since Navy I assume theyre f-18s, helicopters, you name it). This is where Seal Team 6 is stationed. This is where all the SEALs train.
WTF is going on?

Probably true, BUT, fire department inspectors are REQUIRED to inspect all facilities annually to ensure the company is adhering to fire safety regulations.
It's a town of only 2800 people. They should have known what was in that place.
Not taking up for anybody...just stating the obvious.

I feel for them. They risked and lost their lives doing something noble. But I can't help but think that they might have known what was in there. Maybe that's WHY they went in so fast...they knew how dangerous it was and wanted to get their friends out. It's a small town. Everybody knows everybody else. The people that worked in the plant probably lived there too. Believe me, I know. I live in a town just about the same size. Like the gal said in Doc Hollywood: "You can't poop in this town without everybody knowing what color it was." An apt description of small town life.

Either way, they died trying to help others. It's their courage and honor that should be focused on right now. If we start out screaming conspiracy from the start, their names and deeds just get buried in the mire.

Thank you for saying that, J4J. I don't live anywhere near West, but I live outside of small towns just like it. All of our towns have plants like this one and some have even worse chemicals. There's even an ethanol plant just up the road from my house.

We've worked closely with our town's FD for several years, learning search and rescue and rehabing the FFs during our many wildfires. They're good people and well trained. There are too many people on here casting them in a bad light. Since the plant was smack in the middle of town, those FFs KNEW how to fight that fire. If they didn't, then heads will roll over this. I come from a long line of volunteer FFs, they are NOT the idiots that people on the other threads are making them out to be.

I'm not buying the missile theory. The pics look like a secondary explosion to me. The facts will take a long time to come out, but they WILL come out. It's a small town, can't keep that stuff secret for long.

Sometimes an accident is just that, an accident. It would take a lot of variables to come together, but it's happened before and could have happened now. The only thing that makes me keep an open mind on this is the timing. It was too convenient. I'm honestly leaning more to a possible arson, but that's just a gut feeling.

*edit* Maybe I believe that, because I need to. For now.

lots of talk about that on other thread. honestly, to me, they could be from anywhere between southern france and pakistan. or, of course, from boston.

yep, I'd rather wait to see until they actually have an arrest and and ID, way too much speculation and it's only fueling political and ideological fires that are purely nonsense on this point. Regardless of race, creed, political belief this was a henious and cowardly act.
