The first bill that the house put on the floor is the freeze of congressional and workers pay not the fiscal cliff bill. The congressional pay freeze should be separated from the federal workers pay freeze because they are right now using middle class America as leverage for their own pay increases.

fiscal-cliff-showdown-already-damaged-economy

Even if eleventh-hour wrangling among lawmakers yields a solution to the worst-case fiscal cliff scenario, some say damage has already been done.

The political brinkmanship has hurt investor confidence and consumer spending, and if a prolonged stalemate drags into the early months of 2013, the price of Washington’s inaction on the economy could be even steeper.

Murdoch: Senate Deal 'Won't Fix Economy'

Media baron Rupert Murdoch doesn't see the Senate's fiscal cliff vote early Tuesday as a victory for anybody, especially President Obama.

Indeed, he tweets, the deal overwhelmingly passed by the Senate is likely to tank the economy.

[link to www.newsmax.com]

Senate-Passed Deal Means Higher Taxes on 77% of Households

The budget deal passed by the U.S. Senate today would raise taxes on 77.1 percent of U.S. households, mostly because of the expiration of a payroll tax cut, according to preliminary estimates from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center in Washington.

More than 80 percent of households with incomes between $50,000 and $200,000 would pay higher taxes. Among the households facing higher taxes, the average increase would be $1,635, the policy center said. A 2 percent payroll tax cut, enacted during the economic slowdown, is being allowed to expire as of yesterday.

Every time they seem to reach an "11th-hour agreement" and avert these inflated crises.

In my opinion this time will be no different. It's all a show, really. Both sides wait till the last minute, strike a deal then parade themselves as the hero of the day.

It's designed to give us faith in their ability to get things done, but in reality they're powerless against the unending financial complexities they themselves created.

Just my two cents, but that's how it's consistently appeared to me over the last 30 years.

If they raise Social Security taxes back up, they have less of an excuse to cut Social Security benefits or jigger the inflation formula.

Of course Rupert Murdoch will never have to live on Social Security so he doesn't care about that.
