There are different levels of grandfathering. Some allow any weapon or part manufactured before a specific date to be bought and sold. Others only allow the owner at the time of the ban to keep it. These forbid the selling, gifting, giving away, or even leaving the weapon to your children upon your death. Others will allow you to keep them, but they must be made permanently inoperable - ie made into a paperweight or display item.
