Re: Government Health Care Kills More Brits Than Guns Kill Americans
Excerpts from an editorial I wrote for the Delaware Voice from Sept. 29. 2009. From the NewsJournal newspaper in Delaware:

I'd rather be sick in America than anywhere else

. . When Americans hear that all other industrialized nations have universal health care, we imagine that they have care like ours available to all. This is not true. Germany's free-enterprise system makes Mercedes and BMW, but their socialized health care looked like this:

As a brand-new LPN, I worked in a German nursing home. I was the ENTIRE night shift. I had more than 100 patients and no aides. I repeat: no aides. There was a registered nurse on call for emergencies. How much care do you think one body can provide for 100 patients, with dozens quite sick?
In a Wilmington, DE nursing home, I had 25 or so patients at night with 2 to 4 aides. There were RNs in the building and doctors on call around the clock.

Where would you rather have your parent?

At another German nursing home, Frau Schneider was my favorite patient. She was ancient but spry and completely alert.
She had the first grand mal seizure I had ever seen. I ran for help. The response was, " She's so old, what do you want? Let it be."
No set of vitals, no checking her care plan, no adjusting her anti-seizure drug levels.
The message was to shut the door and let it go.
. . .

Germany's universal care is the world's oldest, started by the "Iron Chancellor" Otto von Bismarck in 1883. My German nursing instructor emphasized that his motivation was military and political. Bismarck wanted healthier soldiers for Germany's armies.
People cite statistics to show how bad American health care is.
But outcome statistics don't tell much.
Utah has a 6% diabetes rate, according to White House information.
Nevada's rate is 9%. That is a huge difference.
Utah's citizens have the lowest rates of drinking and smoking in the nation.
Behavior, NOT reform, is key.

U.S. has second worst newborn death rate in modern world, report says.
The United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world, according to a new report.

American babies are three times more likely to die in their first month as children born in Japan, and newborn mortality is 2.5 times higher in the United States than in Finland, Iceland or Norway, Save the Children researchers found

In order for statistics to be a valid indicator, the same criteria must b used across the board and not the total using the criteria of each country.

Infant mortality figures for US are misleading

This is a misleading statistic as Dr. Linda Halderman explains:

Low birth weight infants are not counted against the "live birth" statistics for many countries reporting low infant mortality rates.

According to the way statistics are calculated in Canada, Germany, and Austria, a premature baby weighing <500g is not considered a living child.

But in the U.S., such very low birth weight babies are considered live births. The mortality rate of such babies - considered "unsalvageable" outside of the U.S. and therefore never alive - is extraordinarily high; up to 869 per 1,000 in the first month of life alone. This skews U.S. infant mortality statistics.

Let me tell you the sequel to this editorial appearing.

My dad was gravely ill. The social workers at a local hospital were helping to plan his discharge care.

I call the social worker to return a phone message and left my name.
She called back, are you the woman that wrote that article a few months back about health care?
Not knowing what to expect, I said yes.

She told me her colleagues were in agreement with my views and they posted the article on the bulletin board in the break room.

now THAT surprised me - but it made me happy too.

My father did die shortly after this - but in a nursing home that let his family watch with him around the clock.
They provided food to us, I still feel in their debt for their care.

when we were having the "debate" i read an article about canadians who come to the US for care and they begged us not to allow socialized medicine in the US as they didn't know where they would go for care. oh boy what a mess.
 Quoting: davvi

How many Americans die because they just cant afford treatment or surgery for a treatment? it must run into the tens of thousands..

At least in the UK you will always get the surgery or treatment even if you have to wait a while...and if it requires emergency treatment you will get it right away...
 Quoting: LosTLocos

I have NEVER heard of anyone denied treatment.
You go to the emergency room, you are in.

You may be billed, but our local level 4 trauma center does NOT turn anyone away, ever.

And you will get good care.

Having said that, I am someone who has worked in both nursing homes and hospitals here and in Germany.

There is no question whatsover in my mind that any sane
person avoids hospitals if they can,

but if you need care,
AMERICAN CARE IS VASTLY SUPERIOR.
 Quoting: beeches

Plus there is state Medicaid for people who need care and can't pay for it. It is unheard of that people are dying in the US for lack of care. Where they are dying is in britain. Worst case I've read of in GB and still haunts me, was a woman who went in for surgery, was put on no food or liquids prior to surgery, but they kept postponing surgery, and kept her off food and water day after day, waiting for surgery. She was in such a dehydrated and weakened condition by the time the finally operated that she died, 7 day I think it was. There is no excuse except pure evil that such a thing happened, and think of how she suffered and no one cared.

Here is some research I did for my brother after he lost his job and required medical assistance prior to obama’s deathcare oops I meant healthcare. He never bothered to seek care before problems arose in spite of free clinics in his town thus he had several stokes and now 9 months later still hospitalized and given Medicaid.

Please do some research on religious non-profit organizations that help millions of children and people such as the Shriners? These non profit organizations blow away the metered care obamacare and metered care of socialist countries as they provide room and board for parents and significant others along with travel arrangements.

Thus your rant is mired in nonsense thus serious facepalm to you.

Behavior, NOT reform, is key.

clappa excellent.
 Quoting: davvi

Thanks, Davvi!

 Quoting: beeches

beeches, i am sorry for your loss, but very happy that his last moments were surround by love and good care.

great article and good sense always makes an impression. hf
 Quoting: davvi

thanks davvi - I mean it.

My dad is in a good spot.

You are right, to be able to be with him at death, given a quiet space where he was not in pain, when caring for him at home had proven to be not possible -
well it puts life into perspective.
Your parents are there when you are born, and often we are there for them when they die.

Caring for the aged sick in dignity is also part of the
4th Commandment -
Honor your father and mother, that it may go well for you in the land.

Have a good day today!

Re: Government Health Care Kills More Brits Than Guns Kill Americans
If you are stupid enough to use the system you have to appreciate that this might happen.

The NHS has killed both my Nan's, my Dad, prpobably 1 of 2 Grandads and has also had a go at my wife and brother in law, do i trust them, do i fuck, would i use the NHS, would i fuck. Obarmy care you lot are fucked
 Quoting: F F S

The level of stupidity here is almost off the scale.

What did they die from, if I might ask? I am willing to bet that in the United States they would have died from the same illness.. possibly sooner if they didn't have insurance or the money to pay. In addition, after passing away you would be on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs.

Get lost, idiot.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27526740

So knowing nothing you have the temerity to to tell me to get lost, idiot. You are the idiot, MRSA for both Nan's. Piss poor care for cancer of the osoephegus and wrong treatment for my Dad. Not bothering looking for causes of illness and because of the fucking tick box mentality re my brother in law andd Wife, you fucking waste of space.

Wife had galstones had them for years, but the NHS kept saying IBS, wouldn't do any tests, took her to almost die in casualty before some half wit decided that a test might be in order.

Brother in law, sick for ages, NHS kept saying similar thing, refused to carry out more tests saying it was in his head. Went on holiday and got ill, went to a docs in Turkey and diagnosed with a parasite within 2 hours (after 5 months NHS care).

So still think they would have died in the US or Canada, fuck wit ?

Re: Government Health Care Kills More Brits Than Guns Kill Americans
In 2011, 8,583 Americans were killed with firearms. Meanwhile in the UK, the National Health Service is killing 1,000 people a month or 12,000 a year.
 Quoting: davvi

The equivalent number for the US -mortality amendable to health care- is 286 500 people per year. Or 23 875 people per month.

[link to www.commonwealthfund.org]

The problem with immediatly rushing out anything considered a scandal in European health care is that it is still frequently better than the best the US can do.

Adjusting for population size, in this case almost exactly four times better.

Re: Government Health Care Kills More Brits Than Guns Kill Americans
Low birth weight infants are not counted against the "live birth" statistics for many countries reporting low infant mortality rates.

According to the way statistics are calculated in Canada, Germany, and Austria, a premature baby weighing <500g is not considered a living child.

But in the U.S., such very low birth weight babies are considered live births. The mortality rate of such babies - considered "unsalvageable" outside of the U.S. and therefore never alive - is extraordinarily high; up to 869 per 1,000 in the first month of life alone. This skews U.S. infant mortality statistics.
 Quoting: SilverPatriot

I don't think people here understand how infant mortality is calculated, and rightwing blogs are not exactly a good source for it. Infant mortality is the sum of two stats- neonaltal and perinatal mortality. Perinatal mortality is deaths between 28 weeks of gestation and birth, while neonatal is deaths within the first 28 days of birth.

If you register more losses as live births, your perinatal rate drops with the same number. The total number of deceased remains the same no matter which of the two categoiries you register them in.

The US, in fact, have poor stats in both perinatal and neonatal mortality. Much like under-5 mortality. Or maternal mortality. It is pretty hard to fiddle "mother was alive on leaving hospital" and "mother died in hospital".

If we rank nations for these scores -mothers who didn't survive birth, infant mortality, amendable mortality, etc- the US ends up in pretty much the same spot on each ranking. Low 30s. Ahead of the third world but behind most of the first. We can use a lot of other stats too: Number of years in good health, number of years lost to ill health, lifespan, etc, etc. The US ends up in the low 30s.

We can therefore assert with some confidence that the US is in fact, somewhere in the low 30s in terms of health care performance.
