Re: Would it be Smart to go to Law School?
Ive always loved history and law... Politics is a Dirty business dont know if i wanna go there yet... But i would be a Prosecutor. I wouldnt have the conscience to Defend the Guilty...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24484272

That is something you need to think over for yourself. If it is something you want to do for yourself, you need to ask yourself why? Do you want to fight for what is right, or do you just want to earn a good living? Do you want to help, or do you want to control? Most lawyers end up being control freaks, that is why they want to be a lawyer, then a judge.

Another question you need to ask your self is if it is all worth it. Are you willing to fight your professors, your sence of honor, you ability for fair play, in order to prove yourself tough enough to be a lawyer.

Are you willing to stand alone against your family, friends, and the scorn of an entire city, town, state to protect the lowest form of scum that ever slimed their way across the face of humanity? If not, don't be a lawyer.

if things get really bad then the law will not matter. I see things getting bad soon.

Perhaps rethink your education/occupation to something more useful?

It's one thing to love history. But as a lawyer, when I hear people say "I love law" -- I'm perplexed. There is nothing more conflict oriented and full of negativity than "law". Unless you're doing the boring stuff -- like real estate documents or other transactional work -- I wouldn't recommend it unless you can thrive for YEARS engaged EVERY DAY in hostility, turmoil and usually some degree of human misery. I've regretted my decision despite my previous "love" of history and study of culture.

Here's a good example: I have a family I looked forward to spending free time with today, my only day off other than Christmas. I have had nothing but the following since 11 pm last night -- one client going to jail, another getting a contempt citation served, a divorcing woman worried that her soon-to-be ex will investigate her new-found love, someone in panic that their bankruptcy must be filed this week, and one suicide threat from a client. As a disclaimer, I do NOT make a lot of money as the field of law is FULL of unemployed lawyers. So, I'm lucky to have clients and an income, but if you sit and think about whether that's the kind of life you want, you might come to a conclusion that brings you elsewhere. Good luck.

You should also realize that the "guilty" are frequently NOT guilty but being railroaded and forced to accept a plea bargain or risk a dense, stupid jury. I've seen that too often as well. The accused is not guilty but accepts a lesser charge and pleads guilty to that, where in fact, if there were justice, they would have NOTHING on their record. If you want to help people (that's exactly why I went into law), just remember this: we have a legal system, not a justice system. And helping people in that environment is a joke.

Then give serious consideration to becomming a doctor instead. It will still require the same college courses and some under graduate classes, but it would be a better field to serve than being a lawyer.

You can teach, write, etc. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you could do. But you'd sleep well at night and would not have the lives of so many in your hands, many of whom are totally irresponsible. Sure they'll pay you (as their lawyer), but you will eventually wind up asking "is this really worth it?"
