It's one thing to love history. But as a lawyer, when I hear people say "I love law" -- I'm perplexed. There is nothing more conflict oriented and full of negativity than "law". Unless you're doing the boring stuff -- like real estate documents or other transactional work -- I wouldn't recommend it unless you can thrive for YEARS engaged EVERY DAY in hostility, turmoil and usually some degree of human misery. I've regretted my decision despite my previous "love" of history and study of culture.

Here's a good example: I have a family I looked forward to spending free time with today, my only day off other than Christmas. I have had nothing but the following since 11 pm last night -- one client going to jail, another getting a contempt citation served, a divorcing woman worried that her soon-to-be ex will investigate her new-found love, someone in panic that their bankruptcy must be filed this week, and one suicide threat from a client. As a disclaimer, I do NOT make a lot of money as the field of law is FULL of unemployed lawyers. So, I'm lucky to have clients and an income, but if you sit and think about whether that's the kind of life you want, you might come to a conclusion that brings you elsewhere. Good luck.

You can teach, write, etc. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you could do. But you'd sleep well at night and would not have the lives of so many in your hands, many of whom are totally irresponsible. Sure they'll pay you (as their lawyer), but you will eventually wind up asking "is this really worth it?"
