How about it has the 'potential' to be alive, as long as it contains water. Water being a living element. Not alive, but an element that also has potential to be living, given the right intent behind it.

Every living organism, including the planet itself, contains water.

I was hoping they would release the true nature of the water in Lake Vostok, which has the purest record for making life on this world. Laughable when they stated the water contains no life, when in fact it IS life, or at least the recipe to make anything from it.

If you look at a single cell, and an identical drop of water next to it. The difference between the two is the tiniest amount of matter, and something else. I think intent is the something else, and voila! we have life.

But back to your dirt idea. I think it has the potential to be alive, and continue o provide life through plants etc. But that all requires water.

Do you ever find it interesting that scientists always say we are carbon based life forms, when in fact we are over 90% water, and EVERY LIVING THING is equally made up of at least that or more, water. We, and our world, are water based organisms.

in the karmic esoteic sense yes i suppose everything is alive, but dirt has no cellular membrane or cognotive thought, so doesn't qualify as organic life, now the bacterium living in or around the dirt speck is another story

Pretty much....reason when I start my plants early I will sprinkle dirt with the potting soil. Microbs make the world go around and my seeds germinate 80% faster...before it was 5-10 days but with some dirt it's 2-3 days.

Did you know, OP, that Carl Sagan's first wife, Lynn Margulis, was the person who developed the Gaia theory? Works for me.
