As all can see from reading comments on this post, a simple concept leads to much confusion. Maybe a few comments will help. First, preliminaries, and then on to ZERO!
Mathematics is like a separate reality. It exists, but only in the minds of those who are capable of what is called “abstract thinking”, meaning thinking about things that don’t exist in the physical world. It is also somewhat arbitrary, meaning that some things are defined in a certain way, but could just as well be defined in another way. For example, there is a subject called “Non-Newtonian Calculus” in which entities and rules of operation are defined differently than in the Calculus that Newton invented.
Mathematics is useful because it can be used to MODEL processes in the physical world, such as the exact way that an object falls to the earth when released, and there is negligible resistance on the way down. For example, the mathematical model of free fall can be used to verify that the official version of the 9/11 disaster is a lie. The videos, when examined with exact timing, show that the building fell in almost a free-fall manner, which is impossible unless all sources of resistance were intentionally and simultaneously removed, as is routinely done by demolition companies that know how to do it. There is further evidence that buildings one and two were taken by something beyond controlled demolition, while building seven was done by conventional controlled demolition. In this case, math models were very useful.
A great deal of error and confusion is present in science because many scientists do not seem to understand that when a math model does not correspond to reality, it must be revised or discarded. Physicists are the worst offenders in this regard, and will publish crazy conclusions coming from a math model without ever demonstrating that it truly models the real physical world. In contrast, the math model of free fall has been verified, and can be used with confidence.
Now, about zero: It is a useful item in math models of realities that have a numerical scale, like distance from a starting point, or temperature relative to a defined starting point, like the freezing temperature of water. Zero represents the starting points. It is just an abstract concept based on a definition. If it is useful, use it, and don’t get all philosophical about it! It works!
