Why do the media keep using an obviously altered picture of Adam Lanza?

I'M NOT TRYING TO GAIN SYMPATHY FOR THE GUY but, This picture is obviously altered to make him look particularly scary looking. I've seen the unaltered version [it's in full color] and he looks far less 'scary'. This is done all the time by the media [ALL media] and even police [mugshots]. Same thing was recently done with James Holmes pics. [ link to media2.wptv.com] Just saying.
