BREAKING: Intel Is Reportedly Going To Destroy The Cable Model By Offering People The Ability To Subscribe To Individual Channels
Intel is reportedly on the cusp of delivering something that consumers around the world have been wanting for a long, long time.

Kelly Clay at Forbes reports Intel is going to blow up the cable industry with its own set-top box and an unbundled cable service.

Clay says Intel is planning to deliver cable content to any device with an Internet connection. And instead of having to pay $80 a month for two hundred channels you don't want, you'll be able to subscribe to specific channels of your choosing.

Here's the key paragraph:

This set-top box, said by industry insiders to be available to a limited beta of customers in March, will offer cable channels delivered “over the top” to televisions anywhere there is an Internet connection regardless of provider. (Microsoft Mediaroom, for example, requires AT&T’s service, and Xbox has limited offerings for Comcast and FiOS customers). For the first time, consumers will be able to subscribe to content per channel, unlike bundled cable services, and you may also be able to subscribe per show as well. Intel’s set-top box will also have access to Intel’s already existing app marketplace for apps, casual games, and video on demand. Leveraging the speed of current broadband, and the vast shared resources of the cloud, Intel plans to give customers the ability to use “Cloud DVR”, a feature intended to allow users to watch any past TV show at any time, without the need to record it ahead of time, pause live tv, and rewind shows in progress.

They tried something similar in the UK, the networks just refused to unpackage their deals. Led to some nastiness between Sky and Virgin.

I've been saying we need this for years!

I literally watch ten channels, but I'm paying for 2,987 of them.

The only way this will come to fruition is if the big cable networks allow intel to offer the channel to their customers unbundled. Which would likely mean that it would cost the same for just having one channel as it would for having all the channels that come with the that package.

I used to work for Cox... If intel is going to get this deal going all the big major cable companies would follow suit...

Unless Intel buys an exclusive agreement with ALL of the major broadcasters...

But I would imagine they would have to pay a shit ton of money for the contract and this would cause them to have to make the consumer pay out the ass for their "Specialized Package"

I flipped through 200 channels the other day and got only filth and stupidity. You should see Time Warner Cable's channel lineup. Outside of the dumb sports channels, there are a ton of non-english speaking channels, "green" channels, Oprah, just a big pile of liberal rubbish. There are TWO Christian channels - the one with the lady with the big purple hair and the Rod Parsley and Joel Olsteen freaks. (Why oh why do Chrisitans on TV all look like outcasts of society?) - I can't stand TV, I just keep it for my elderly parents until I can't anymore. They deserve that - it's all they have for entertainment.

They're fighting to stay alive among the Rokus and online vids for free.

I ditched my cable and will never use it again. Many others have ditched it for many reasons, not least, many can no longer afford it.

It is wrong that I have to pay for the filth and sick twisted progressive programming on some many channels to be able to watch the few other channels I do want to watch. It is disgusting that I am forced to pay for Al Gore's channel, MSNBC, MTV, BET, Oprah, Spanish languae only, even specifically homosexual channels just to name a few.

I don't even watch tv that much these days. Sometimes I'll browse through the news networks (CNN, FOX, MSNBC, and C-SPAN), but they tend to focus on only a small percentage of the news.

I don't watch tv for entertainment at all.

This is not a technical problem IPTV has been around for years it is a US federal communication commision (or in canada crtc) issue and a content provider issue.

Any idiot can solder together an IPTV box and install an app like minerva but the FCC and the content providers need to agree to allow it. If the already established google TV, Apple TV etc cant convince them then how the hell does Intel think they can.
