CFL's are complete shit! Get rid of them if you have them, as they produce dirty electricity and a terrible light spectrum. As soon as I switched mine out I started feeling much better.

There is a reason why governments push them so much and it's NOT to save you money!

Check your 115v - 120v service as it may be running hot @ 122v - 127v that could produce more heat because the transformer on these need to work harder.

I designed thoose as cold cathode 1 watters ...

BYU in SLC made them into incremental power waste & money waste POS !

They have an internal start resistor that makes them consume more power as time passes .... as resistance is lowered by thermal decay ...

what used 10 watts consumes 90 at eight month time & start to burn before the year ends ...

money savings none ...

power saved none ...

consumer ass fucked to benefit power mafia ! sideways

Re: Pics of a few CFL lights from my house, ever see a CFL melt.
When we remodeled this house last summer, we put in airtight cans that are made for line voltage LED's. The fixtures didn't cost any more than standard cans, they are airtight so no leaks into or from the attic, and we got par 30 flood LED's at Costco on sale for $18/each minus a $4 rebate from our power company per bulb. I admit that 16/per bulb isn't cheap - especially when you're buying 38 of them as we did. But they look great, I have the major rooms on dimmers (the LV kind that are meant to work with small loads vs hundreds or thousands of watts of juice going thru them to the lamps) and the results are excellent. We have bright, white lighting without a blue/green shift like the CLF's give you. No flickering, and best of all, you can put your hand up by one of them and there is NO HEAT! They run cool even when they're on all day or all night or both!

Our summers in AZ are BRUTAL - power bills of five hundred or more PER MONTH are not unheard of for June/July/August/September. The last thing we want is any lighting source that heats up a room we're already paying dearly to cool off. These LED's have made the kitchen and family room MUCH cooler and the bedrooms, too. The LED/CLF dimmers from Lutron are pricey but worth every dime because whether you're dimming one lamp or twenty, the dimmer can be adjusted for total wattage it's controlling and I have one of them controlling a single LED over the Fireplace in the MBR. I can dim it down to almost nothing or bring it up to full (like a 100 watt flood) brightness - no problems, no hum, and no heat at either end of the output spectrum. They are NOT cheap but these things quickly pay for themselves. I've got fourteen of them in our Family Room and another 10 in the kitchen adjacent to the F/R. The light is amazingly good, clear, and crisp without being some oddball color. Food looks like it should and we are really happy with the decision to put these pricey bulbs in. Costco - by the way - doubled the manufacturers' two year warranty and warranties the bulbs for four years now.

As CFL age they turn brown at the base, heat from the transformer inside! have not seen one melt down tho. Could have been a power spike, brown out, or just old age is all?? Will have to look mine over now.

I could smell them burning, ended up replacing ALL of them. Pieces of junk cost too much, burn out to quick and almost caught on fire. What a wonderful product.

Wow. I'm a little pissed at myself for not checking out these things before replacing VERY SINGLE FUCKING FIXTURE in my home over to CFL. I've felt like crap since (mid Dec), but I had wrote it off to the flu. I'll be taking all CFLs out this weekend. Fuck it - I'm hoarding all the incandescent bulbs I can buy - arrest me.

we only use incandescent bulbs....the others give out light that is horrible to read by, very expensive, don't fit all lamps, and they're poison

Open can, 45 degree angle down facing. I have seen the ones they say do not mount upside down, these did not have that warning on them, I went out of my way to make sure when I picked them up. In all 22 out of 24 "burned", rather expensive lesson to learn. I find one in 10 burnout in the first week, but hey at least those don’t melt right!

You can see in the pic the powder even came out and the bulb was not even attached to the rest of the unit anymore.

looks like you took some kind of power surge...

no way they would all do that at the same time like that

I never really thought of protecting lightbulbs from power surges...

I wonder if it would cook the LED ones?

I tried those CFL's in my house too but ended up going with LED in the end..

LED's are MUCH better

Me, too...hoarding and stocking up un incandescent bulbs, I mean. I've known the CFL bulbs were a scam, another "obsolescence" marketing technique, and not what they claimed, but this thread has really shown it.

LED lights seem great, but I'm wondering now what we will find out about them, in the future?

Don't accidetally break one in your house either which will turn your home into a HAZ MAT scene. Your house will now be filled with mercury which requires VERY careful clean-up, DO NOT use a dust pan and a vacuum.

This damage is typical for the poorly designed CFL bulbs. This overheating damage is usually worse in recessed / enclosed light fixtures.

The damage is from both heat and the UV spectrum emitted from the bulb which further degrades / yellows the plastic base.

CFLs are garbage.

Isn't safely disposing of them tricky too? I would love to see them taken off the shelves.

I thought about getting in to it with the manufacturer, but I just chalked it up to a lesson learned and just wanted to be done with it. Was worth my mental health just to let it go.

BTW you have to pay to “properly/legally” dispose of these things also @ a buck a piece.

What I learned is simple, I never had to throw away the incandescent bulbs away by the dozens and they cost near nothing to buy. With CFL’s I figure I have had to dispose of over 50+ easy in the last two years and a cost of a few bucks a bulb, I spent more money with the manufacturer then I would have ever recouped in lowered electric costs. I even had to throw away these bulbs in these pics and most of them still worked.

My final conclusion the manufacturer loves their expensive product with their lovely planed obsolescence built right in.

Like Trin and a few others said LED is the way to go and they are getting better and cheaper by the month.

on a side note I am surprised the insurance companies have not stepped in on this yet.

Re: Pics of a few CFL lights from my house, ever see a CFL melt.
Incandescent bulbs are only inefficient when you are cooling your home or if used outside. During the winter, excess heat from incandescent bulbs warm your home and there is no lost energy at all -- 100% of the electrical energy is converted into either light or heat.

If you live in a cold climate, replacing incandescent bulbs with much more expensive and toxic alternatives is stupid. Laws banning incandescent bulbs in Europe, Canada, etc. are criminally moronic (if not motivated by other corrupt factors).

I'm surprised that no one ever discusses this simple fact.

The biggest problem with LED was the light spectrum, but they really have been working on it. Another year and they should have it perfected and the product will get cheaper and cheaper as we buy more and more.

Chrit, thanks so much for this info. While at Costco's the other day, my son was trying to convince me to purchase a pack of these bulbs.
While not knowing too much about them, I knew enough to say "no". I heard they were dangerous.

Anyways, my intentions were to look up more info, once I got home, so I could pass it on to my son, plus learn more myself about the hazards
connected to these bulbs--I forgot.

I will show this to my son, now. They use these bulbs at his workplace and I really don't think they are aware of how dangerous these things are.

Thanks again for shedding more light on this subject.

After they look like that, they get to the point that they don't work all the time. If you wiggle they a little, they work again for a while. I have been replacing them with incandesent bulbs as they burn up.
