If you think the mercury vapors are bad just wait until you accidentally break one of these bulbs in your house. Bad stuff

I could smell them burning, ended up replacing ALL of them. Pieces of junk cost too much, burn out to quick and almost caught on fire. What a wonderful product.

Go LED. Will last forever. Not toxic. Very little power draw. It is more expensive initially but over time should outlast you.

You are supposed to evacuate the house, call HAZMAT, to decontaminate. They don't tell you that on the box.

looks like you took some kind of power surge...

no way they would all do that at the same time like that

I never really thought of protecting lightbulbs from power surges...

I wonder if it would cook the LED ones?

I tried those CFL's in my house too but ended up going with LED in the end..

LED's are MUCH better

I'm pretty sure all the led type bulbs are self protected with a diode. At least the ones I have seen are.

Good call! The light spectrum is much more pleasant with LED's. It's more natural and it's *rumored* that they help with depression, anxiety and sleep cycles.

Yes, they do catch on fire. Frequently.

Yes, they emit mercury vapor, more so when first turned on.

Yes, all florescent lighting induces high frequency measurable voltage (and hence, current flow) in living beings even at considerable distances. Schumann resonance 7.83 , blah blah.

So, yeah, stick with incandescent and candles, or better yet sun. And don't block all the UV, it's how cells communicate...

LEDs are good in some situations, but they are not perfect and certainly expensive. For recessed cans, you should use PAR (directional) bulbs. A 30W PAR will work as well as a regular 60W bulb. Amber (low-blue) bulbs are best for use at night because they encourage melatonin production. That's why shift work has been shown to be bad for our health (carcinogenic), because of the blue/white light that most building use.

Also, check your power quality with a Graham Stetzer meter. The higher the number, the more likely you are to see have hot wiring and melted bulbs.

Re: Pics of a few CFL lights from my house, ever see a CFL melt.
If something like that was done from power surging, that's no bueno. Think of what could happen if we do have some sort of electromagnetic blast from the sun that possibly fries our entire grid. I would imagine a power surge of that proportion would be strong enough to cause every CFL in use to explode. That's a lot of mercury vapor in the air... in just about every home and business in the US.

I started switching out all of my lightbulbs to LED a couple of years ago. Haven't had to replace one yet. And even though they'd still get cooked by a power surge, at least they won't put mercury in my breathing bubble.
Don't be afraid to let go.

CHRIT, Tell me why you had these in your house, come on man you not new to GLP. You know these bulbs are dangerous with Hg-gas and giving off EMF that are harmful to humans.

uhhuh

I will never give up my incandescent bulbs, ever.

When I put them in, turned on the light switch, they EXPLODED.

If I can't use light bulbs, I guess I'll save on electricity. I have since learned how to make candles.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25672410

Not common for CFLs to do that. You didn't perhaps use them with a light switch that has a dimmer, did you? Although I'm sure you know you can't dim CFL's, they are at risk to even be connected to a dimmer.

Besides that, probably a issue when the company that made them.

Some CFLs have a two pin base - presumably to prevent using a regular light bulb.

Does anyone know where to buy an adapter from the two pin base to a regular screw in base?

Wow...Unlucky, all of our CFLs have lasted for years, I believe i have only ever had to replace one so far...What brand are they and how much did they cost?

Also, stop worrying about the mercury, unless you break about 20-30 of these things and lick the glass you won't get sick.

Luckily I stocked up on about 5 years worth of incandescent bulbs. I might make a killing in a couple of years on eBay if LED's come down in price.

 Quoting: BRIEF

No dimmer but your right.

I believe it was the ballast clicking on and off for no reason that melted them, if that is true that also means they were costing me a lot more to run then a regular bulb.

Now what I did notice is the newer generation of these things have vent holes, but look at it, it’s still browning slowly.

I use all DC lighting, because of my solar...incandescent bulbs get hot enough to fry an egg on and will explode if you splash them with water while they're hot...also had halogen lights years ago and the kids and I sailing paper airplanes actually set fire to one when it landed on one...if a light gets hot you are wasting energy.

We went to LED lights at 15 bucks a piece X 24 bulbs + all the CFL's I tossed I'll never get my money back in electric savings.

What a freaking rip off the whole thing is.

CFL's are complete shit! Get rid of them if you have them, as they produce dirty electricity and a terrible light spectrum. As soon as I switched mine out I started feeling much better.

There is a reason why governments push them so much and it's NOT to save you money!

 Quoting: Silvanus

Man, each day I learn on how fucking evil governments can be. What a bunch of sick fucks they are for suggesting us to use CFL bulbs.
