Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
Ok, moving out of a one bedroom apartment to house.

I've got a lot of shit.

Packing right now. Trying to do at least 3-4 boxes each night.

Any tips or suggestions?

I'm making an inventory of boxes and contents on my iPad and trying to group like items together to the room they are going into.

I move at the end of the month.

Good luck with your move OP.

Use either coloured stickers or numbers for each room as it will be easier to see.

Don't fill large boxes with books!

Keep some money aside for an unforseen extras like light bulbs.

Are you buying or renting?

Wrap stuff with the green plastic from Uhaul...
I love that shit!
You can bundle things together without boxes and it keeps them from getting banged up. Great for furniture legs too!

Get a sharpie. Fill the box with your dildo collection. Write "dildo collection" on the top of the box with the sharpie.

It's not any kind of science. Put the shit in boxes and bring the boxes to your new place. Open the boxes when you get there. No need to be obsessive about it.

Hold off on packing yet. Packing always goes much faster than anticipated.

When I was a teenager I worked for a moving company for a summer and we packed and moved all your sh** in a matter of hours.

You will find yourself going through the boxes a number of times looking for something you need if you start packing already.

If you're moving to a place in the same area and will be moving your own stuff (as opposed to hiring movers), a lot can be transported in bags - plastic shopping bags, canvas bags, etc. Books are especially good at being transported this way. It's a lot easier to carry some heavy bags with your arms down at your sides than a heavy box held in front of you.

Re: Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
Just read an article about how it's best to pack books in luggage bags if you have them-cardboard likes to tear.

I moved a lot when I was younger, we packed most of our stuff in Rubbermaids, it was easy to see what was in the boxes and kept everything unsmushed.

Pack a few boxes that have the things you'll need for the first week, make sure you know where those boxes are! And LABEL LABEL LABEL!!! Can't tell you how many times I couldn't find the t.p. or where I shoved my phone charger last minute.

It's good that you're keeping an inventory on your iPad, but if you can write the main information on an index card and tape it to the box, even better. "Bathroom. Shower stuff" or "2nd bedroom. Computer cords/keyboard/blank CD's"

Cleaning box- Not sure if you're gonna have a chance to get into your house to clean beforehand, Clorox wipes are nice to wipe shelves down first. Windex, trash bags, roll of paper towel.

Watch out for how many boxes are labeled "Misc", when I moved into the place I am now, I think I literally had 10 boxes all labeled the same and didn't know what was in any of them.

Good luck!! hf

treat it like buying a car.
check all lights
check oil
check fuel gauge level

Relax until it is almost the end of the months and then just cram the boxes full of whatever and sort it out as you unpack.
Friends will help you move furniture if you ask, Only ask your very best friend to help if you need a body moved, trust me on that last bit of info.

Re: Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
closer to moving;;;;

make a box with:
a few coffee cups,plate knife,etc
tissues,loo paper-spare kettle-if you have one.
some bickies and snacks.
dish/liq, cleaner,cloths,(i put incense/pens paper/paperwork needed for connecting utilities/personal paperwork and pet stuff in this box too)
this box goes first and put on kitchen bench so you dont have to open 20 boxes just so you can have a cuppa or bite to eat or got to the loo.

Put ALL you electrical leads phone chargers/cables,tv cables extension leads, power cords for appliances in a bag and put that with your 'first box'-on the bench.nothing worse than sorting through tonnes of shit just to hook you pc up or charge your fone.

put towels/sheets/linen for the bed in a bag so your not hunting through boxes just to make your bed or have a shower.-this goes with box in kitchen and bag of cables.

frozen food from freezer-last to pack into cooler/eskys-first to unpack-turn fridge on as soon as you get in-ideally the fridge should be first big item in the new place.

meantime:

wrap glassware breaksbles in newspaper, use your noggin lighter stuff on top of heavier with breakables.Small strong boxes for books-tape the bottom too.

stickers for rooms and what goes outside or in a shed so people helping/movers dont have to ask where stuff goes.

Re: Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
Someone else mentioned this but very important to have one or two boxes with coffee, mug, coffee pot, t.p., plate, set silverware, some food/snacks, shaver, & anything else you'll need first night/morning so as not to have to go through a bunch of boxes. Mark them well in red or whatever so you know which boxes they are or just put the in your trunk or car seat so they don't get lost among all the other boxes.

For bedding, clothes, towels, other light items go get some cheap 30 gal. trash cans to move them in. After moving they stack nicely for next time or use them for other things.

For books use those cardboard file boxes then run tape around on the sides that the grip holes are not. They're the right size to not be to heavy when full of books & easy to carry with the grip holes.

Many things, such as food from frig & cupboards I just move in paper grocery bags.

Don't move it. Have an apartment sale. Buy replacement stuff with the cash once in the new place on craigslist. Make the sellers deliver it.

Re: Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
Pack rooms 1 at a time
Label them as to which room they go to
When delivering just put the boxes in the appropriate rooms

When unpacking set up the kitchen first, then you can take your time with the other rooms, won't be so overwhelming that way

Any valuables pack, deliver and unpack yourself. Don't trust the movers.

Re: Moving out of apartment into house, any tips for packing?
Never label your boxes with what's in them.

You're better off to number the boxes and keep a log on your iPad/cell phone of what's in each box.

It is a good idea to mark the boxes with the room they belong in. (ie:kitchen, bedroom...)

Pack books in small boxes.

Use papertowel to wrap dishes. It's cleaner than newspaper and re-usable in your new place. Pack these in small boxes.

Make sure you have a hand truck and/or a dolly handy.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````
A week before you move, put in an address change at;
Work
Insurance
The Bank
Creditcards
Driver's licence
anywhere else you can think of.
If you have the option...
Put in an Address Change/Mail Re-Direct at the Post Office.
atm...That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Here's a trick I've used. Pack up a suitcase with two days worth of clothes and toiletries as well as a small saucepan, couple of tea bags, coffee cup, a few snacks like raisins and crackers, and a towel, roll of toilet paper, soap, pencil and paper. Close it, don't let it get put on the truck. You can now safely pack everything else on the last day as you will have your "bug out supplies" all in one place.
If you aren't moving too far, a good way to save a huge amount of time is move your clothes wrapped in a sheet instead of laboriously folding and packing in boxes. Spread out a sheet on the bed, go to the closet and just grab about a foot wide bunch of clothes between your arms, squeeze, lift off the closet rod with the hangers and all. Lay the "packet" out in the middle of the sheet. Repeat one or two more times making a stack of your clothes. Roll them up in the sheet, throw it over your shoulder like a body, and walk it out to your car or truck, flop it down. Repeat. When you get to your destination, all you have to do is hang them up, voila. Try it, you'll be amazed at what a time saver this is.
Invest in a couple of tape guns and keep them spaced around the house. If you only have one tape gun you can never find it when you need it.
