NASA Wants to Give Our Moon a Moon
NASA mulls plan to drag asteroid into moon's orbit

Who says NASA has lost interest in the moon? Along with rumours of a hovering lunar base, there are reports that the agency is considering a proposal to capture an asteroid and drag it into the moon's orbit.

Researchers with the Keck Institute for Space Studies in California have confirmed that NASA is mulling over their plan to build a robotic spacecraft to grab a small asteroid and place it in high lunar orbit. The mission would cost about $2.6 billion – slightly more than NASA's Curiosity Mars rover – and could be completed by the 2020s.

Why?

Training so they can hollow it out and create a space station?

Awww, i had hoped they were going to bring an object a few hundred meters across into orbit.

You could hollow out that shit, resin the walls, fit airlocks, fit docking ports, hollow out water/waste storage tanks and have a huge solar array and docking port outside of it.

It would be much easier to build a station on/in a hollowed out orbiting rock than putting up a station that is the size of an aircraft carrier.

Let us hope the dumb bastards who cannot see this as interesting, all just fuck off and take a long walk in a hot desert.

It's ideas like this that are the real future of humanity. Not fucking TV screens and sitcoms and Ipods and all the other shit they shovel off to us as 'important'.

In all seriouness though, the proposed idea is to grab one that's only about 7 meters wide (so even if something went terribly wrong and it were to end up on an earth collision course which is extremely unlikely, it wouldn't do any damage anyway).

Sounds a bit like the Iron Sky attack where the nazi's come to earth also dragging meteors to drop on big cities. I think it's quite effective and to have one on stand-by is just the cherry on the cake.

Who the heck is going to pay for this?

I thought the U.S. of A. were bankrupt with an insane debt?

Would Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos together with Richard Branson be able to pay for this project?

I can't see how they will be able to pull this one off without private investors financing.

I'd be happy if they send Obummy and Moochelle on orbit to the asteroid never to come back to Earth again.

$2.6 Billion?

Hell, we have spent nearly half that sending King BO and his queen on vacations.

I would rather spend it on a BAR than another 10 million Obamaphones
