The Cleveland Plain Dealer published our names several years ago. Somehow they missed me. Anyway, many of us dropped the paper. They've had a couple of layoffs since then. Boycott this newspaper....

No, you're just easily scared. Life isn't a television program. There is no percentage in going after a guards family. "Oh, they could blackmail a guard!" Except that in real life, if they tried, they'd only lose from doing it. Again, life isn't a movie.

Take the addresses away and see if that doesn't stop the whole thing from doing anything at all.

Who cares about guards? A dime a dozen. Same with cops. They get killed all the time.

Its really the lawyers and judges who are the real paranoids. What do they do to them in mexico - cut their heads off with chainsaws, torture, hangings, rape.

Even cops get more respect .

Since when is being a gun owner like being a sex offender?
 Quoting: Leslie Zevo

Yes, that's EXACTLY what they are likening it to...when all the gun owners were doing was OBEYING THE LAW!! It's nuts.

Yep... why not also list all who have had abortions, dui's, misdemeanors, who vote democrat, etc?

Wow...

So this is...

Really not an issue, is it? Guards being threatened by inmates? How many? What proof do we have that this story even happened? How did the inmates get a hold of the information? Did they write it down? Memorize it?

No, we're being told that this happened and that it's a threat. Let's all be scared because people know where armed people live? I thought the point of gun ownership was to make people like that think twice about giving you problems?

Think about it.

This is a none issue, made up to control how you think.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 551387

Shut up.

Do you want your name and address posted in the newspaper?

It's called privacy

And everyone has a right to it
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17660272

Sure, but that doesn't make it a real issue. "Oh, they might send a hit squad to get the guards kids!"

Because we live in a television program? Get real.

My address has been all over the web for years and guess what? Nothing bad has ever come of it.

Could this be a problem? Sure. Could aliens land tomorrow and take over the world?

We have a lot more evidence that that might be a problem.

So, don't get your shorts in a bunch over this. When a few guards are shot because of it, then it's a problem. Or at least one. Until then? A non-issue.

I don't agree that the addresses should be advertised like that. It doesn't make this into something to actually worry over.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 551387

So, genius, tell me why they keep people's health records private? Huh?

Nothing "bad" could ever come of it if someone got your records, Right?

You ever take business law in college? No? I didnt think so.

There is a word called Forseeable. It's why people sue their asses off in this country.

If it's a foreseeable crime, then they can sue if the crime is committed

If prisoners have information they can use to commit a crime, then it's clearly a foreseeable crime based on this new situation.

I choose to not publish my life on fb. That's my choice. I foresee an issue putting my info out there. Because I use my brain.

If you choose to put your info out there and base your safety on what has not happened so far, then you're living in the la-la land of denial and stupidity.

Cheers

Re: What a surprise! Inmates using newspaper's gun owner map to threaten guards, sheriff says
When a guard is really threatened, it should lead to additional time in prison.

Having said that. Even though I think this information shouldn't have been published in a newspaper, if an inmate wants the address of a guard, I am sure there are dozens of ways to get that information, legally.
In this case the information was presented to them on a silver platter.
 Quoting: Psych

Exactly.

I happen to personally know a handful of prison gurads.

They get threatened every day. Their life is on edge every day

And now they have to worry more that the criminals that already despise and hate them, now have their personal info, without having to do any work to find it

Crazy

What I also don't think is that there will be, or has been a problem from this yet.

It isn't going to be either. This is an overblown reactionary piece meant to get you to respond, much as you have.

Don't worry, I understand that you can't see anything you don't currently believe, because that would take work.

Think before you write things, will you?

I didn't say it wasn't a threat, I said that we don't know this actually happened, and that if it did, that the inmates probably don't have long lists of addresses committed to memory.

If you aren't intelligent to understand what I wrote, then why do you think what you're saying about anything else is correct?

How many, by percentage, of "correctional officers" die each year? How many in the line of duty? Right, it happens. But it isn't some vast problem. "Make it that long"? because they quit? It has to be an awful job and extremely high stress, but that doesn't mean the story was accurate or that the inmates have perfect memories.

And don't forget,

American prison system does NOT rehabilitate criminals. In fact, it has been proven, that the prisons harden criminals and create more revenge and anger issues.

And aren't they releasing criminals because of financial strain?

Yet they keep putting people away for the silliest things - collecting rainwater!!!

So they have a revolving door institution that picks people up, hardens them and strips them of any sense of decency, and then releases them back into the population.

Joy. This world is insane
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17660272

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

THIS

The united states currently holds 25% of the WORLDS prison population for IDIOTIC offenses. Offenses that the rest of the world would 'slap them on the wrist' for. Minor Drug offences, unpaid fines, domestic problems, etc.

This doesn't even COUNT the amount that are currently under state supervision for said 'Crimes to Humanity'....

It's a business. 90% of the prisons are Privately owned. The judges & cops take Payola from the Prison industry to send MORE people to jail for idiotic offenses.

Then non-violent people get put behind bars with VIOLENT people, are forced to adapt to survive, and come OUT of prison with a brand new mentality. Unable to get a job now because 'society' has branded them a leper. Now most just don't even give a shit if they commit 'real' crimes to survive.

I'd say at least 1/3+ of the people currently in prison should have never been there in the first place. It's a fucking joke. Only armed robbers, murders and rapists should be there.....and that's the MINORITY in the prison system.

Please before being condecending try reading what I wrote. I never said they were to commit them to memory. I gave you very realonable examples of how this will happen. And guess what? this shit happens all the time and we will never hear about it because only riots get coverage. you really dont hear about any c.o. dying in the line of duty, just police and fire. thats just the way it is.
my hubby had a gang hit out on him last year. we spent months in a constant state of ready. we had to inform our kids school, we had to change up our schedules constantly, and we were always stressed. in public, at work, and sadly in our home. it isnt fun and i dont wish it on anyone.

Ugh, I knew nothing good would come of this travesty of journalism.

What I don't know is how the prisoners were able to divine the locations of the guards through that information though? I understand that the addresses were published, and it probably ruled out 2/3rds of the population, but without typing in address after address hoping to get lucky and it's where the target guard lives I can't see how it's done.

Did the newspaper actually publish the names of the owners along with their addresses? uhoh

Sure, you can threaten them all you want, but you better believe they will get you back and attempt to curb your threats with various attitude adjustment techniques such as the hole and beat downs. It is a dog eat dog and very dark world for everyone that walks through the gates of a prison regardless if it is a job or a conviction for a crime.

so many ignorant people in media/news need to be arrested. they have crossed the line far too many times IMO.

Never heard of freedom of the press?

Names and addresses are public information, as are PERMITS issued by the Government, unless expressly private.

When you ask for YOUR rights to be protected, you cannot violate the rights of others.

Public access is public access.

Understood. We're not arguing for such things to be against the law(at least I'm not) but just because something CAN be done legally does not mean it SHOULD be done.

With rights comes responsibility, and I just wish the people who released these names had a little of it.

If its no big deal, why do most of us post as Anonymous Coward?

Protection from the GOVERNMENT officials who swim these waters.

Not that it means anything, since IP addresses are easy to obtain by anyone.

The fact is privacy is NOT a protected right when one asks for permission to do something with the Government.

When these people begged for their "permit" to have a CCW, did they READ the application? Was there ANY privacy agreement terms in it or the Statute about CCW permits?

I bet there is NOT and 99.99% of the fools who signed their right to privacy away when getting a permit do not even know it.

Caveat emptor, fuckers.
