Question about mercury-containing amalgam tooth fillings.
Hey everyone,

I have a question here for the folks at GLP. I'm asking here because I know the "official" facts about these fillings aren't 100% accurate and what I might read elsewhere might not be true. I'm going to the dentist for my 6-month cleaning next month, so seeing if I should say something perhaps.

I have one of these mercury-containing amalgam fillings on one of my back teeth, and for the past couple of days it's been emitting a kind of metal taste in my mouth, like when I touch my tongue to it. I've had it for a long while (before I learned they may be dangerous, maybe 8-10 years?) and I don't recall having this thing taste of metal since the day I got it.

Do these things break down? Is mine breaking down? Structurally there are no problems with it that I can see, no cracks or anything on the surface, just this taste. Is mercury leaching out of this thing?

I know many would recommend that I get it replaced with a non-mercury alternative, but it's just not possible financially right now even though there's nothing I'd rather do. Maybe I could get it capped or something if that might help?

To sum it up, my questions for you fine folks are as follows: Do these break down and start leaching mercury, and does it sound like that's what mine is doing? Is there anything I can do to help slow the release of mercury from the filling/slow mercury absorption by my body? Would getting the filling capped, if that is even done, help?

Thanks in advance for any advice! ;)

Re: Question about mercury-containing amalgam tooth fillings.
I've had like 8 of these fillings since I was 7 years old, I am now in my 40s...I am alive and kicking.

Do I wish I didn't, of course, but unfortunately it is the strongest alloy they can use that won't have to be replaced and can withstand years of wear and tear.

Has if affected me? Maybe, but pretty much everything in our lives is supposedly killing us, so you choose. You can ask for the alternative white fillings, can't remember what it is, but be prepared to have to get them refilled.
