Funny that I log on and see this old thread.. I was down there in Playa Del Carmen over the summer and fucking loved it.. Also went to Cuba for a week..

I'm working remotely for a company in the US making USD.. In November I'm going back down and staying..

Every 6 months I have to come back to the US to renew my visitors visa.

Fuck the USA.. It's way better down there, at least for me..

Where are the cheapest places to live in Mexico? Could you live very basically, on say, $20,000, for 20 years?

What does 500 usd a month for rent equal in US dollars a month for rent? I'd say about $200 to $250 a month?

What I meant was u can live in a decent condo here for 500 a month..at first I even looked at a small 1 bdrm...had a kitchenette and a lcd tv with cable for 250...its was clean and nice. The landlord did warn me that the building had alot of young single mexican girls who would come knocking to see if i needed anything..hehe...and he was serious...

Whats the process for US Citizens wanting to move there, is it better to just cross back and forth over the border every 6 months?

I read there are more American's going to Mexico them Mexican's coming into the US now. I've been thinking of leaving myself, not sure where but there should be few people and lots of surf where ever I go.

From my research and guesswork, the border towns (which are the most violent now) will become the most prosperous in the years ahead. Think Ciudad Juarez with its maquiladoras (factories.)

When I had to visit a doctor one of his nurses told me that her father had moved to Guadalajara and was happy there!
They are Americans of Mexican descent. And the father opened a small business there.

Also I have gone to TJ to dentists and they were great
and inexpensive!
I was told when I was there by one dentist that one General practitioner doctor in TJ a female was so great that she had a 2 month waiting list!

I have met a doctor that owns a Youth Clinic in Baja Ca.
Dr.Carlos Soria educated in Europe. He seems very experienced.
He does just about everything to improve a person's looks.

I plan to retire next Spring. I have no intention of staying in the US. I have spent the last 9 months or so considering which county to move to.

Health care, long term VISA, language, weather, crime, cost of living, transportation... so many things to consider.

Currently my at number one on my list is Malaysia. Excellent health care that is cheap. English widely spoken. Malaysia My Second Home VISA.

Panama and Belize are backup plans. But I would prefer the more exotic Asia. And Malaysia would place it at my doorstep.

Mexico was never high on the list. Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic were higher.

My wife wants Europe. So have looked at Italy, Spain and some Greek islands.

Get International Health Insurance. Do not buy property, always rent. From what I understand if you live outside the US for 330 days a year and possess a residency VISA you do not owe federal taxes, but still have to file.

The plan is to travel around until I find the right place. In the military I spent 13 months in Korea and loved it. I have also traveled to Germany and France.

I know 8 people that have left to live in Chile over the last 9 months.

I'm out of here, next Saturday.. I bought a one-way ticket this morning.

Today I finalized living arrangements to rent a whole upstairs section (2 bed, 1 bath) of a beautiful 2,500Sq foot home for $675 a month. I have my own private entry, a deck and another balcony overlooking a tropical garden for $675 a month, furnished, with all utilities including cable and Wi-fi included. Located in a secure newer community that's a 5 minute bike ride or 20 minute walk to the beach.

I don't see how I could be unhappy in that situation. It's beautiful there. My money will go twice as far.

And when my Visa is up every 6 months, I'll spend $400 on roundtrip airfare to come back to the US and visit family for a few weeks before heading back down to Mexico.

Also, since I've started this thread in January, I got a job working with a company who moved out of state and allow me to work from home. I'm now making the same working 20 hours a week from home as I was when I was spending 40 hours in the office.

Life in Mexico should be very nice..

I'm thinking about moving to Peru!
