Costa Rica is a better choice. If you are able to live in a community and function with other people you will be better off.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49403972

And they have disbanded their military forces and are instead putting the money for that to better use, so that in itself is a good reason to move there.

Costa Rica I hear has been a long time favorite of Western expats. So much so, that real estate prices have skyrocketed, and the .gov has found many creative ways to relieve expats of their money. The cost of living there now is rather high.

But there is a huge expat community there for people that don't want to get away from the types of people they deal with at home.

Their disbanding of their military came at the price of American military protection and meddling in their affairs.

Costa Rica hasn't been a "favorite" for at least ten years or more. It was a "favorite" in the seventies and eighties.

Rubbish. Costa Rica has an army. They just don't call it that. The money, if there is any, goes to the politicians and corruption in general.

It has always amused me how people believe that garbage. It is true that the forces don't have heavy weapons. But the primary purpose is to prop up the ruling class, not defend from external aggression.

Yes, I am aware that Costa Rica once had the reputation as Switzerland of C.A.

Not so much anymore.

Re: Fuck the USA, I am moving to Mexico..
I just lost my 40k a year job, have no savings because of the cost of living in this shithole country, and am sick and tired of being a fucking slave to the man.. I'm going to tie up a few loose ends here, get a passport and purchase a one way ticket to Cancun..

I know nobody there, but its beautiful. I am a graphic/web designer so I will bring my laptop and hopefully find some work from the resorts, OR, at least work remotely for U.S. clients I have so i can make american money which goes much farther there..Eventually I would like to find a full-time job with a design or marketing company who will allow me to work remotely.. Making USD 30k a year while living in Mexico would be like making 90k in the USA..

I am sick of the stuck up fucks that occupy this country, sick of the non-existant american dream, sick of the taxes, the politicians and the fake ass people.. People do this everyday and everyone I have heard of is glad they made the move..Seriously, FUCK THE USA and everything it stands for..

Wrong. It was booming with crazy high real estate prices (and the properties were selling) from as late as 2005-2007.

With the crash of 2008, expat investment in the country shrunk as it did everywhere. However, the Central Valley area never stopped attracting a lot of expats and investment dollars.

In other areas, the recovery steadily continues. Many expats are still calling this country their favorite off-shore haven, and they can now find some good real estate deals for once, if they dig deep enough.

The active real estate market is a reflection of expat investor activity.

There's nothing wrong with Thailand. It's still a great place for expats, and it's rated #1 in the world for the best experience for expats.

been studying up on moving out for over a year. will have a pension next spring.

boquete, panama was 1st on the list for the longest time. i tried learning spanish. without spanish i think your kinda limited down there. but learning a new language is too hard.

i wanted belize because english is the official language. but health care is not the best.

kuala lumpar, malaysia was the next #1 on the list because of widespread english, outstanding health care, cheap, no need for car, and (for me) climate.

but my wife said too hot, too humid and too buggy. so now it is inchon, korea. she is originally from korea.

so i look at that as the start, but plan to check out all of asia and australia/ new zealand.

having a residency visa is important to me. with that and living outside the u.s. 330 day/year = no fed taxs (you still have to file)

I plan to take advantage of the 330 exempt option too, of course..

Wrong.. Mexico is safer and less violent on average than the US. As far as corruption, there might be more corruption at the local level, but the corruption is different. We're talking about small bribes to avoid trouble and shit like that. Not a global conspiracy like the US is involved in.

In Mexico it's beautiful, inexpensive to live on US money and the people are humble, polite and friendly. There is culture, unlike in the US where our 'culture' is a fucking joke. There are less bullshit laws, things are far more laid back and it doesn't take you 45 minutes to drive 3 miles away.

The US hasn't turned into anything except a shithole full of arrogant, uneducated and materialistic robots whose goal in life is to work, be brainwashed and consume as much as they can possibly afford.

They have an army, it is called Public Force as opposed to being called the Army. It carries out the exact same functions that the army did before the name change.

During 1996, the Ministry of Public Security established the Fuerza Pública or Public Force which reorganized and eliminated the Civil Guard, Rural Assistance Guard, and Frontier Guards as separate entities, they are now under the Ministry and operate on a geographic command basis performing ground security, law enforcement, counter-narcotics, and border patrol functions.

Outside the Fuerza Pública, there is a small Special Forces Unit, the Unidad Especial de Intervencion (UEI) or Special Intervention Unit, which trains with special forces of Israel, and its namesake in Spain and other democratic nations, but is not part of the main police forces. Instead it is part of the Intelligence and Security Directorate (DIS) which reports directly to the Minister of the Presidency. In case of war in Costa Rica, the United States has offered their military to use at Costa Rica's disposal.

But if you want to insist that Costa Rica doesn't have an army that's fine by me.

Costa Rica doesn't look like it has an army. With no heavy weapons or armored units, etc., I don't see how you can conceivably call it an army. A militia, maybe. It only has 11 civilian birds in it's "Air Force", lol.

Costa Rica has been taken over by the Chinese. That's their new Ground Zero.

Well holy shit, thanks for the info!!! Exactly why I'll be flying back up here in 5 months for a weekend so I can return and have another 6 month visa.. Pretty fucking genius, huh?

I've got all the bases covered but thanks for the input.

At any one time there are probably thousands of Americans who are illegal in Mexico. The Mexican government does deport if there is overstay on the six month visa.

But there are probably tens of thousands who renew every 6 months.

I have read that the number of Americans living in Mexico is at least one million. This is a disputed number, no one really knows.

Costa Rica is a better choice. If you are able to live in a community and function with other people you will be better off.

They readily roll over and play submissive whenever Uncle Sam demands it.

Costa Rica hasn't been a "favorite" for at least ten years or more. It was a "favorite" in the seventies and eighties.

When it was cheap.

Still, Rica embraces democracy and a restrained corruption in their Gov in comparison to the banana republic corruption available through out this hemisphere.

Guatemala is imminently cheap and affordable.

This area is so much more affordable...pick a country if you have savings.

Guatemalans would routinely be seen traveling to America to buy up second hand cars....to tow back to Guatemala City for resale: of course, getting stopped by Mexican Police seeking a kickback was a game of chance ...."...how much this time, officer...".
