Mother Shipton’s Prophecies; You’ve got to read this!
Who was Mother Shipton?
According Wikipedia’s article on Mother Shipton, she was a woman that lived from 1488 to 1561, and she was reportedly a soothsayer. The prophecies often attributed to her, weren’t put into print until 1862 by a Charles Hindley, three hundred years after her death.

Facts vs. Fiction
The fact is that the English in the prophecies published by Charles Hindley are NOT in 16th century English. They are in a more modern English, such as Mr. Hindley himself might have used. That’s why they are clearly fiction. Or are they??? I find the prophecies intriguingly accurate, as to the portions of the prophecy fulfilled after Mr. Hindlely’s time. It is because of this fact, that some say Mr. Hindley published his own prophecies under the borrowed name of Mother Shipton. Surely, no one would have considered the words of a struggling author of no reputation, but the words of a well-known soothsayer? Well, people just might listen to those.

Suspend Your Disbelief for a Moment
If you would suspend your disbelief long enough to actually read the prophecies, which I shall quote, you will see that despite the disputed authorship of the prophecies, there may be some merit in them. I personally find them eerily accurate in the content already fulfilled, and frightening in the content which is yet to be fulfilled. There are things that neither Mother Shipton nor Mr. Hindley could have possibly known nor surmised in their day written in the prophecies. Here, see what I mean:

Foreword
There are multiple prophecies in the lyrical rhyme published by Mr. Hindley in 1862. Some things had already come to pass before Mr. Hindley put them into print; and I see no point in discussing those prophecies. It would be a waste of my time and yours.

Interestingly, some things have come to pass after Mr. Hindley put them into print. Those would be of interest to set a kind of “track record”.

There are only two prophesies yet to be fulfilled. One portends a natural cause of a series of natural calamities. The other portends a human-caused disaster.

Fulfilled Prophecies (after put into print)
First, let’s have a look at the prophecies that have been fulfilled since Mr. Hindley’s time.

(1) “For in those wondrous far off days, The women shall adopt a craze, To dress like men, and trousers wear, And to cut off their locks of hair.”

Now, it did not become acceptable for women to wear trousers until the 1960’s, and women with men’s haircuts didn’t start until much later. For Mr. Hindley to put something like that in print in his day must have been tantamount to heresy. Furthermore, had he published the prophecies under his own name, he might have been stoned to death. So, maybe we should cut the man some slack and understand why he hid behind a pseudonym.

(2) “When pictures seem alive with movements free, When boats like fishes swim beneath the sea, When men like birds shall scour the sky, Then half the world, deep drenched in blood shall die.”

Half the world dying was clearly a reference to the two World Wars, which hadn’t happened yet. The first motion picture camera wasn’t invented until 1895. That’s 33 years after the prophecies were put into print. Only a genius could have envisioned such an invention without the aid of some clairvoyance. The first airplane wasn’t invented until 1903. That’s 41 years after the prophecies were put into print.

Yet-to-be-fulfilled Prophecies

Now, here’s the scary part. Well, at least for me it is scary.

Now, please keep in mind that the prophecy sets the stage by giving time markers, e.g., things that are happening now! Then, the prophecy goes into things that clearly haven’t happened yet.

(1) “And iron men the tail shall do, And iron cart and carriage too.” (Fulfillment: Automobiles, Tanks?)

(2) “The kings shall false promise make, And talk just for talking’s sake.” (Fulfillment: Obama’s campaign promises?)

(3) “And nations plan horrific war, The like as never seen before.” (Fulfillment: Obama’s threat of war?)

(4) “And taxes rise and lively down, And nations wear perpetual frown.” (Fulfillment: Obama’s impending new taxes on the rich?)

(5) “Yet greater sign there be to see, As man nears latter century, Three sleeping mountains gather breath, And spew out mud, and ice and death.” {Fulfillment: Iceland (done), Mt. Fuji (coming), Mt. Vesuvius (coming)}

(6) “And earthquakes swallow town and town, In lands as yet to me unknown.” {Fulfillment: Fukashima (done), New Madrid (coming)}

(7) “And Christian one fights Christian two, And nations sigh, yet nothing do.” (Fulfillment: ?)

(8) “And yellow men great power gain, From mighty bear with whom they’ve lain. These mighty tyrants will fail to do, They fail to split the world in two.” (Fulfillment: “Yellow men” = Chinese, and the “bear” = Russia. Will China and Russia gang up to attack the U.S.???)

(9) “But from their acts a danger bred, An ague – leaving many dead. And physics find no remedy, For this is worse than leprosy.” (Fulfillment: Will China & Russia use nukes on the U.S.?)

(10) “A fiery dragon will cross the sky, Six times before this earth shall die.” (Fulfillment: Does she mean six nights in a row, or does she mean six eras? I’m inclined to believe six nights. Could the “fiery dragon” be Nibiru?)

(11) “Mankind will tremble and frightened be, for the sixth heralds in this prophecy. For seven days and seven nights, Man will watch this awesome sight.” (Fulfillment: Perhaps the prophecy is to mean that this is the sixth time that Nibiru has “flown” by, and we will see it for a whole week as it zips past us).

(12) “The tides will rise beyond their ken, To bite away the shores and then, The mountains will begin to roar, And earthquakes split the plain to shore. And flooding waters, rushing in, Will flood the lands with such a din, That mankind cowers in muddy fen, And snarls about his fellow men.” (Fulfillment: If Nibiru is real, and it “flies” by our planet, it will have a prodigious gravitational effect upon our oceans and tectonic plates).

(13) “He bares his teeth and fights and kills, And secrets food in secret hills, And ugly in his fear, he lies, To kill marauders, thieves and spies.” (Fulfillment: “He” is clearly a pronoun for “Man” or “Mankind”).

(14) “Man flees in terror from the floods, And kills, and rapes and lies in blood, And spilling blood by mankind’s hands, Will stain and bitter many lands.” (Fulfillment: A sad commentary on the nature of some human beings, that they will take advantage of the situation, to kill and rape. It’s nothing new. It shouldn’t surprise anybody, although it is still sad that as a human race, we haven’t grown up yet.)

(15) “And when the dragon’s tail is gone, Man forgets, and smiles, and carries on, To apply himself – too late, too late, For mankind has earned deserved fate. His masked smile – his false grandeur, Will serve the Gods their anger stir. And they will send the Dragon back, To light the sky – his tail will crack, Upon the earth and rend the earth, And man shall flee, King, Lord, and serf.” (Maybe after Nibiru goes around the sun, we will see it again in the sky for a short while).

(16) “But slowly they are routed out, To seek diminishing water spout. And men will die of thirst before, The oceans rise to mount the shore. And lands will crack and rend anew, You think it strange. It will come true.” (Fulfillment: Danion Brinkley prophesied that in the last days, water will be the most valuable resource on the planet.)

(17) “And in some far off distant land, Some men – oh such a tiny band, Will have to leave their solid mount, And span the earth, those few to count, Who survives this (unreadable) and then, Begin the human race again. But not on land already there, But on ocean beds, stark, dry and bare. Not every soul on Earth will die, As the Dragons tail goes sweeping by. Not every land on earth will sink, But these will wallow in stench and stink, Of rotting bodies of beast and man, Of vegetation crisped on land. But the land that rises from the sea, Will be dry and clean and soft and free, Of mankind’s dirt and therefore be, The source of man’s new dynasty. And those that live will ever fear, The dragons tail for many year.” (Fulfillment: This is the part that scares me. Basically, all existing land will be so corrupted by the “dragon’s tail” that we will have to settle on new land that has risen from the oceans.)

(18) “But time erases memory. You think it strange. But it will be. And before the race is built anew, A silver serpent comes to view, And spew out men of like unknown, To mingle with the earth now grown Cold from its heat and these men can Enlighten the minds of future man. To intermingle and show them how To live and love and thus endow The children with the second sight. A natural thing so that they might Grow graceful, humble and when they do, The Golden Age will start anew.” {Fulfillment: Aliens come to help us rebuild the human race in harmony and love: The Golden Age begins (again?)}

Conclusion

The actual author of the prophecies is not important. The important things is we have them to reflect upon and consider. Surprisingly, the “Mother Shipton” prophecies match other prophecies, including those in the Bible. However, the Mother Shipton prophecies are much clearer and easier to understand. The dragon is clearly a metaphor for a celestial body. The silver serpent is clearly and alien spacecraft. It’s all easy to understand. The question is this: Are the unfulfilled prophecies going to come to pass? Only time will tell.

Isn't the comet that is supposed to light up our sky brighter than the moon at the end of next year supposed to be visible for about a week? Fits with one of the prophecies.

And the part about the god's sending it back and the tail end hitting us reminds me of the movie Melancholia, where the planet passes Earth by, only to be whipped back around and sling-shotted directly into us.

Re: Mother Shipton’s Prophecies; You’ve got to read this!
the problem with these prophecies is that they are vague:

"a king not keeping his word" could refer to a king, president, prime minister or any other leader.

These prophecies are only fulfilled when you see something happen which resembles the prophecy.

A prophecy should be specific, conclusive and accurate.

"A big dragon will kill a small dragon" means nothing, unless there happens to be 2 dragons walking around.

what happens if there is another world war and half the population of the world dies? Would the prophecy be correct again ? Or would the WWII be the `wrong` war?

It is obvious to me that the comet ISON will do us in... the cometary shower, not the comet itself.
The cometary shower may/will send us meteorites, mostly small particles.
However the process of planetary (Earth) cooling through meteorite bombardments may take several years before it becomes noticeable.

Actually women took to wearing pants and shorter hair in the 1920's. Go back a century to the first woman's movement and you find that women adopted the wearing of pants (trousers) as a way to protest being slaves to men.

Why pick on Obama? Oh I see, you have personal axes to grind.

I have no personal or political axe to grind, thus I easily see that Charles was writing about things happening in his day.

You can pull out any politicians of the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century and find lies, lies and more lies.

Nothing prophetic here, no more than saying 'I think the sun will rise tomorrow'.

Taxes has been the bane of mankind since taxes were invented. In the 1700's there was that little thing call the Boston Tea Party - that took place over taxes without representation.

Submersibles were around as far back as 1620-1624 [link to en.wikipedia.org] built one,

First military sub was called 'The Turtle' [link to en.wikipedia.org] Built 1775
So Charles already knew about submersibles and submarines.

Oh and he also knew about flight too. While the first powered heavier than aircraft wasn't seen until the Brothers Wright, gliders and the like were being built and flown all over the world as early as 1799-1850's - George Cayley - Gliders [link to inventors.about.com] Of course it goes back Further when you consider the Chinese and DiVinci.

People knew about cars before the first one traveled down the road. Just like people knew about space flight before Sputnik made its fateful voyage.

Few inventions just happened out of nowhere, people were actually talking about 'hey, wouldn't be nice if I didn't have to hook up the horses to the carriage?' or 'Hey, wouldn't it be splendid if we had a machine that would stitch cloth together?

There is no real prophecy here. The Majority of the 'prophecies' are based on knowledge that existed or could be surmised by people in Charles' days.

Just like we pretty much predicted excessive use of computers, or cell phones, or any other technological wonder we have now way back in the dark ages of the 1960's.

No prophecy, just a brain that can reason.

Re: Mother Shipton’s Prophecies; You’ve got to read this!
...and then there are the Hopi Prophecies.

"This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder. (white man with guns)

"This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes -- the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies." (covered wagons, motor vehicles)

"This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes -- the coming of the white men's cattle." (long horn cattle)

"This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron." (the railroad)

"This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be criss-crossed by a giant spider's web." (power lines or the internet?)

"This is the Sixth sign: The land shall be criss-crossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun."
(roads & highways)

"This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it." (oil spills)

"This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom. (the 60's)

"And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease.............

If you study end-times prophecy, it is truly amazing how perfectly interwoven they the writings of some 65+ oracles are.
"Moral of the story is I chose a half measure when I should have gone all the way. I'll never make that mistake again.

I'll give you a prophesy, the sign that the end has started will be a volcano in Australian. That will be your first sign.

Why would she be talking about the USA? She lived in the 1500's in Yorkshire.
 Quoting: Doobie

When she spoke of Christian #1 fighting Christian #2 she was probably referring to the Catholics fighting the Protestants.

Re: Mother Shipton’s Prophecies; You’ve got to read this!

(5) “Yet greater sign there be to see, As man nears latter century, Three sleeping mountains gather breath, And spew out mud, and ice and death.” {Fulfillment: Iceland (done), Mt. Fuji (coming), Mt. Vesuvius (coming)}

(6) “And earthquakes swallow town and town, In lands as yet to me unknown.” {Fulfillment: Fukashima (done), New Madrid (coming)}

(18) “But time erases memory. You think it strange. But it will be. And before the race is built anew, A silver serpent comes to view, And spew out men of like unknown, To mingle with the earth now grown Cold from its heat and these men can Enlighten the minds of future man. To intermingle and show them how To live and love and thus endow The children with the second sight. A natural thing so that they might Grow graceful, humble and when they do, The Golden Age will start anew.” {Fulfillment: Aliens come to help us rebuild the human race in harmony and love: The Golden Age begins (again?)}

I think we've all learned by now that prophecies are all BS....they are all just generalizations that can be interperated to any event. No man..or woman in the history of humans have ever prophesised anything that has come true...look no further than GLP

The only thing I have an issue with is that most americans seem to think that prophecies are all about America (point 2,3 and 4 as an example). There are 194 countries in the world. Good post though. :)
