Re: Hey lets play Darwin versus Disney! Who's imagination was better?
I say the best imagination was when the person wrote that they entire planet was poofed into being in seven days by a magic sky wizard. Then a fully formed and educated adult male was formed from mud. Some time after the sky wizard tore one of his ribs out and made some chick out of it. Things were going fine until the Disney-esque talking snake made shit hit the fan by eating the Disney-esque cursed apple.

From Wikipedia:
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Darwin continued to avoid public controversy and to accumulate evidence supporting his theory against the anticipated arguments. In 1858 the information that Alfred Russel Wallace now had a similar theory forced early joint publication of Darwin's theory. The reaction to Darwin's theory, even after publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, was more muted than he had feared. One of the first responses to review copies came from Charles Kingsley, a Christian socialist country rector and novelist, who wrote that "it was "just as noble a conception of Deity, to believe that He created primal forms capable of self development... as to believe that He required a fresh act of intervention to supply the lacunas which He Himself had made." For the second edition, Darwin added these lines to the last chapter, with attribution to "a celebrated author and divine".

In 1860 seven liberal Anglican theologians caused a much greater furore by publishing a manifesto titled Essays and Reviews in which they sought to make textual criticism of the Bible available to the ordinary reader, as well as supporting Darwin. Their new "Higher Criticism" represented "the triumph of the rational discourse of logos over myth." It argued that the Bible should not be read in an entirely literal manner, thus becoming "a bogey of Christian fundamentalists ... but this was only because Western people had lost the original sense of the mythical." The Christian fundamentalists were just as vocal.

There was close correspondence between Darwin and his American collaborator Asa Gray, a devout Presbyterian who discussed with him the relationship of natural selection to natural theology and published several reviews arguing in detail that they were fully compatible. Darwin financed a pamphlet publishing a collection of these reviews for distribution in Britain. In one 1860 letter to Gray, Darwin expressed his doubts about the teleological argument which claimed nature as evidence of god, though he was still inclined to vaguely believe in an impersonal God as first cause:

With respect to the theological view of the question; this is always painful to me.— I am bewildered.– I had no intention to write atheistically. But I own that I cannot see, as plainly as others do, & as I [should] wish to do, evidence of design & beneficence on all sides of us. There seems to me too much misery in the world. I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent & omnipotent God would have designedly created the Ichneumonidæ with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of caterpillars, or that a cat should play with mice. Not believing this, I see no necessity in the belief that the eye was expressly designed. On the other hand I cannot anyhow be contented to view this wonderful universe & especially the nature of man, & to conclude that everything is the result of brute force. I am inclined to look at everything as resulting from designed laws, with the details, whether good or bad, left to the working out of what we may call chance. Not that this notion at all satisfies me. I feel most deeply that the whole subject is too profound for the human intellect. A dog might as well speculate on the mind of Newton.— Let each man hope & believe what he can.

I'm going to let you in on a little known secret Celeste, but you gotta promise not to tell anybody.

Ready for it?

Charles Darwin was actually a demon that Satan placed on earth to bury dinosaur bones to try and trick the people of earth into thinking that the world was more than 6,000 years old... Then he took the carbon 14 atom and fudged the numbers for it's decay rate. Then he and several other demons from hell wrote several religious texts that when dated using the carbon 14 method would show to be older than the bible. All to damn millions of souls to hell.

And what did God do while these agents of the Devil were running amok and leading his children astray you may ask.

Well he just watched it happen without lifting a finger.

And how does Prince Charming vs Maleficent enter into the equation?

You are making yourself, and your religion look bad. If you want to get your point across try using logic, maybe some scripture that backs said logic, and if you can find some scientific fact that backs your scriptures I'll give you bonus points.

If you want an example on how to get your point across read back over DGN's responses. They are counterpoints to my points, not random animated figures created by a Nazi sympathizer.

Re: Hey lets play Darwin versus Disney! Who's imagination was better?
Let's end this tiresome thread the only way it can be ended...

We ALL believe that a hebrew deity named god/yahweh/jehovah/jesus who has been around forever, decided one day that talking to himself/themselves for eternity was exceedingly boring.

So! He/it/them made the earth and populated it with lots of interesting things including the most interesting thing...Us!

Now even though this super being was capable of doing all of this, he/it/them/they couldn't instill in the human the automatic desire to love and worship 'the them'.

Whether 'the them' were just being stupid is anyone's guess, but the fact is 'they' fucked up royally. So, nevermind!!
'The them' decide that getting some of the bearded patriarch type humans who DO believe in them/it/thing/bob to pen some sort of biography on their behalf will be convincing enough to bring the sheep into the fold.

Oooops! Fuckup number two. They give the humans a brain! Uh oh...now they can deduce shit and even use reasoning.
'What have we done now?' cries 'the them'!
So they/bob/norman/dingbat/it decide to send one of their number to earth as a convincer. But they send him to one isolated location in a desert armed with a robe, a beard, some long hair and a couple of magician's tricks.

Obviously the inept fellow makes some fatal errors and gets nailed to a plank for his effort.
But it's all part of the plan!! Now everyone will be really convinced because he got offed.
'Let's get the patriarch's to include a story about how we raised our fellow up back into space to be with us again...just to REALLY get them on their knees!' the bobsquad decides.

And here we are folks! Jesus did it all!!!
Hooooray!

It's so much easier than trying to figure out what really happened, now isn't it?

Amen

in the end,it comes down to what makes sense to the individual.
to me evolution is a logical progression, a slow gradual series of minute changes over many millions of years.

and yet, the wonder of it all, the breathtaking beauty, persuades, nay demands that i look for a cause, a creator if you will.

i believe in god, for i must.

i believe in evolution as it intrigues, and fascinates. an unfinished discipline full of questions.

creationism disturbs me. it's disciples seem desperate.

honk if you love Jesus1

So what you are saying is that when Jesus was on the mount of olives he foretold wait for it ...

HUMAN NATURE!!!

Predicting wars and the rise and falls of nations, without giving specifics is as easy as predicting the sun will come up tomorrow, see I'll do it here and now.

And lo there will come a time when all the great nations shall tremble and fall. There will come a great war and man and woman will slay one another, the streets will run red with blood, and the noonday sky will become as night.

Now what I did there was be vague so no one can say I'm wrong. I gave no dates, I gave no names, but I will be proven right someday in the near to very far distant future. Does that make me divine? Does that make me some sort of prophet? NO! It makes me a man who understands human nature. Our governments will make war with one another that is a certainty. Will the streets run red with blood? Sure will if enough people die close enough together. Will the noonday sky become as night? Light enough fires; set off enough bombs; drop enough missiles; and I'll bet that the smoke gets thick enough to darken the day.

Jesus was a great man, he wanted to help his people be nice to one another, nobody can fault him for that. But he didn't need a magic eight ball to know that they would start killing one another at the drop of a hat.

Now in answer to your question: if evolution makes us into a better people why is the suffering of mankind at an all time high?

Short answer is that it isn't.

Long answer is lets take a look at history.

around 75 years ago the Holocaust happened. I'm pretty sure suffering was much higher during those days than it is now.

The Black Death 1348. That wiped out 50% of Europe's population. Suffering at its finest!

in the 12th century there were the Inquisitions, where anyone who didn't fall in line with the Catholic church was tortured till they repented, then put to death.

Then there were the dark ages where the average life expectancy was around 30, and quality of life was horrible for the common folk. Nobility treated the common man like refuse. Suffering could be said to be a lot higher than it is in modern times.

Now where is your evidence for suffering to be at an all time high again? And if it is why doesn't your benevolent and all loving God step the **** up and do something about it? What kind of parent will watch their children suffer? I have 2 children and I'll be damned before I idly sit back and watch them suffer.

Your propaganda is wearisome, your arguments are worn thin, and your prophets are proven false and inept. And still you wonder why more people don't turn to Christ. The age of reason is upon us, mysticism and superstition are relics of a much worse time in human history... The only thing that separates religion from myth is 2,000 years.
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

well, this "imaginary friend in the sky" has foretold with accuracy the things that exist on the earth today and has also foretold the solution, and provided us with answers and a hope for the future.

.....He will wipe out every tear from their eye, and death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away"_ Revelation 21: 3, 4

Evolution offers WHAT hope for the future?
 Quoting: CelestialMaiden

And what things that have been foretold exist? Mind you now I want quotes from scripture, and links to events / inventions.

The hope evolution offers is to our descendants. Higher mental capacity, better bodies, immunity to disease, longer lifespans. Can't really see any of those as bad things.
 Quoting: AgnosticDeity

While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: "Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?"
In answer Jesus said to them: "Look out that nobody misleads you; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, "I am Christ," and will mislead many. You are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet.
"For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.."- Matthew 24: 3-7

"But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God"..- 2 Timothy 3:1-5

these are undergoing fulfillment as we speak in an unprecedented manner. If evolution makes us evolve into better people, why is the suffering of mankind at it's all time high?

food for thought
 Quoting: CelestialMaiden

You are just as stupid as the militant atheists. Fact is, you don't shit. Just as much as they don't know shit. I've resigned to the fact that our feeble minds will probably never learn how we came into place and what the purpose of us being here is. Accepting a word-by-word bible account as dogma that is just as unlikely as the 'monkey! poof! random! human!' take on things the atheists have is presumptuous.

Okay..so it took a lot of imagination on Darwin's part to imagine a donkey evolving into a horse....well, Disney made the bad boys turn into..well...

The only thing that separates religion from myth is 2,000 years.

exactly, but you have to remember to say "confirmed "after every lame prediction. they love it when you say CONFIRMED!

for instance;

next year, there will be unrest in the middle east...CONFIRMED

tomorrow the weather will be hot in hell...CONFIRMED

on this exact date 100 years from now , i will be dead....CONFIRMED

Re: Hey lets play Darwin versus Disney! Who's imagination was better?
at least Disney appeals to our child like imaginations-not claiming anything else but Fantasy-
evolution claims to be "scientific"....and remains only a theory

"Their defense is always "but evolution is only a theory!" Which is true. I mean, it is a theory. And it's good, you know, that they say that. Because it gives you hope that then maybe they feel the same way about the theory of gravity and they might just float the fuck away."

Just a sidenote here but theory in common conversational usage is not the same as the scientific term.

Theory as applied to gravity, evolution etc is defined as "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.

In common conversation when most people say "theory" they actually mean hypothesis .

It's a very common mistake and mostly down to poor scientific literacy and inadequate education.

Anyway carry on all, a very insightful thread. popcorn

Re: Hey lets play Darwin versus Disney! Who's imagination was better?
Great thread.

I believe everyone has left a source out of the equation, and I believe it's a better argument then what has been commented on so far. I believe that life was brought here and whoever it was that brought the life here, wouldn't that be our creator, our g-d of sorts?
The problem is not the problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem.
