Re: These Are the Top 10 Jobs Most Likely to Attract Psychopaths
THe top 10 should include government alphabet agencies, like the NSA, my neighbor has been working for them for almost 20 years and she is certifiably insane, no joke, ask my other neighbors, she drives from wisconsin to palatine Il. smashed drunk (12 hours drinking w/no food in stomach) almost every weekend.
She's an accident waiting to happen and she doesn't care, I guess the NSA job is driving her to insanity, and the "cure" is powerdrinking.

Where is Engineering, Engineering, Engineering.

I sorta quit my controls design career - (mostly contract work) as I found it being taken over by people "who want to make big bucks" and have great acting skills and can win the boss's trust using every trick in the book. As a detailed electrical designer / software writer, I have no time to compete with their back stabbing.

In the 80's it was more geeks that would help each other, now it is a new breed of...im not sure... giant ego, can convince anyone of anything and absolutely takes out anyone that they are working with that they deem a threat(those who actually having studied and worked their ass of to be as good as they can)

how do you feel about engineering these days?

Re: These Are the Top 10 Jobs Most Likely to Attract Psychopaths
The key to understanding psychopathy is to identify people who have absolutely no remorse. A definite lack of empathy and are slightly socially 'off'. They just seem to give you the creeps, and you really don't know why. Is it the look in their eyes that seems flat and cold, even when they're smiling and pretending to be warm?

The reason that surgeons, CEOs and other high-powered career types made the first list is that in order to lead, and make tough decisions, you need to lack empathy and have a giant ego. If a surgeon doubted himself every time he needed to cut, or regretted his choices, he would certainly find himself unemployed very quickly. Lawyers and CEOs also. I've actually known quite a few psychos at high levels in academia, although those professions actually attract more neurotics and narcissists and possibly sociopaths than psychopaths. The one commonality is a glib social demeanor, and surrounding themselves with syncophants and people who make them look good. The male surgeon psychopath will almost always be married to a low-ranking, beautician/hair stylist/housewife type, of low intellect, who has bought into his bullshit and is possibly terrified of him, who presents the family unit as functional and wholesome. Meanwhile it takes some digging to find out how many times that surgeon has been sued, and how many people are in the morgue because of him or his actions. Psychopaths ALWAYS leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Look for people who have a lot of lateral moves in their career trajectory- why is that? Most people who are normal and high functioning make mostly linear and upward progression, but a psycho nearly always has an erratic career path, unless he managed to strike gold early and is in a position (military, police, government, Wall Street etc.) that rewards and nurtures psychopaths.

One thing I wish psychopaths would do is become more self-aware, and realize the benefit that at least a pretense of empathy would have in their conduct. Refraining from harming others except under certain extraordinary situations, a la Dexter, would be a better model and make them much more effective. It would also lessen human carnage, and potentially animal carnage as well.

A lot of psychopaths also hunt animals and love to display their trophies. I've never known a psychopath who did not own and cherish at least one firearm, or have an extensive knife collection. Chefs may make the list due to the very structured hierarchy of the commercial kitchen, which rivals the military, or they may enjoy being surrounded by blood, and the ability to butcher and disregard flesh whenever they wish. Knives and cutting interest and excite most psychopaths, no matter what their profession.

When you meet one, you'll know. You may not consciously be able to put a name to what they are, but your amygdala will most definitely know, and tell you to run.

Why do people like to brag about and romanticizing their self-percieved, self-diagnosed psychopathy nowadays? You people have been watching to many movies, vicariously living out alpha fantasies through psychopathic move characters.

Let me guess: you're "really good at manipulating people" and "you always get what you want" and you "could have been whatever you wanted" (but you're just to lazy, right?! High-achievers in disguise)? Did I ballpark it?

My guess is no, most of you are not superawesome alpha male Hollywood psychopaths, more likely suffering from plain Aspergers syndrome and some kind of superiority complex stemming from rationalizing your own social awkwardness; more McLovin than Ari Gold. There's nothing kewl about psychopaths.

Re: These Are the Top 10 Jobs Most Likely to Attract Psychopaths
Any position of power. Empathetic people beginning with the most empathetic will not be able to tolerate a "polluted" environment. They will be told they are depressed or suffering from some sort of psychological impairment, which is true, but not just caused by an internal source but an external one...soulessness. Psychopaths/Sociopaths will be just fine with the situation thus seen as perfect for the position, when in fact, it's simply because they are unaffected by "poor" work environments that would make an empathetic person sick. They just don't give a F to make it simple.
