In exchange for turning in an operable gun, people will receive a $100 gift card to various stores, such as Walmart, Target, Meijer or Kroger.

Fairfield business co-owner withdraws offer to destroy unwanted guns
'I made a mistake in offering this to the community and I need to rescind this offer,' says co-owner of Hammond Tractor Co.

By Ben McCanna bmccanna@centralmaine.com
Staff Writer

FAIRFIELD -- When Gary Hammond offered to destroy guns at his service shop, he said he wasn't advocating people do it, but providing an alternative for anyone who had second thoughts about gun ownership after Dec. 14's mass shooting in Connecticut.

Hammond Tractor Company co-owner Gary Hammond, right, and employee Chad Tibbetts hold pieces of destroyed firearms in Fairfield on Friday. In the wake of the Newtown, Conn. shooting, Hammond Tractor – a hunter and gun owner – was offering to accept and destroy firearms from local citizens. He has since rescinded that offer.

Monday Hammond, owner of Hammond Tractor Company, rescinded the offer after getting a torrent of complaints from the public.

Anybody have any information on how successful these tactics have been?

I personally can't imagine anyone falling for something like this.

I guess some people DO fall for things like this.

God willing, the day won't come when these people wish they hadn't of accepted the offer.

Jersey City authorities say they collected dozens of weapons during a weekend gun buyback program.

Among the 164 weapons collected during Saturday's event at a city church were 93 handguns, 27 shotguns and 44 rifles. People who turned in their firearms received $100 for rifles and $150 for handguns and automatic weapons.

Yarmouth police say they collected 72 weapons during a weekend gun buyback.

In exchange for their guns, people got to choose from a $50 certificate from a shoe store, $10 gift card to a restaurant or a $20 gift card for an outdoors store.

[link to www.nbclosangeles.com]

The city has been hosting buybacks since 2009 as a way to help remove guns from the streets. Officials said since the program began citizens have turned in nearly 8,000 guns.

Citizens can turn in their guns -- anonymously and with no questions asked -- for gift cards worth either up to $100 for pistols, shotguns and rifles and up to $200 for assault weapons.

Why would anyone give up a firearm for the small amount of money they're offering.

I paid way more for mine than what they're offering in exchange for them. Big time ripoff!!

If there is anybody out there seriously looking to sell their firearms, I suggest they hang onto them for just a little bit longer.

Depending on what kind of legislation they do push through, just think of what you could get for your guns on the black market!

Far cry better than some of the measly $50 offers that are currently out there.

10.00 GC to a restaurant? you cant even get a meal for 10.00 anymore at a restaurant where was this too mcdonalds? thats beyond insulting, and the OP mentioning no questions asked even if theyre stolen, are people that dumb that they dont think they will run every one of those serials through to see if it was stolen or used in a crime?

What if you had the gun illegally? Would it still be no questions asked?

Yes, no problems, no questions asked.
Yesterday Albuquerque ran out of 'gift' cards...
Forty thousand dollars worth. Two hundred dollars was the most they give.

I heard the news say people were waiting to buy any weapons not bought by the county. Hey, that's a great idea.
After all it is still legal to buy a legal weapon.

I realize buy-back programs are nothing new but this just blows me away.
Do the people really think they are curbing gun violence?

I 'd like to see more input on this thread. Anyone?

Re: GUN BUY-BACKS IN YOUR STATE
Dude, just go there and offer people money for their guns, those who are there to exchange them for gifts, we did that in Seattle couple weeks back. Plenty of civilians were there along with cops biding for guns. 2+hour wait, no one wanted to wait so they parted away with 50-100 bux cash instead of a shitty gift card from the 5-0s.

I learned this year gun buy backs can be very awesome like an auction.

Re: GUN BUY-BACKS IN YOUR STATE
they dont offer enough. if i'm going to turn in my gun, i expect to at-least be paid something near what i paid for it. government prints ****ing money, and they cant be bothered to spend some of it making their own bs scheme work? i'd probably sell an ar15 to the police if they would pay reasonably.

It's like rescuing a firearm, because the police are only sending them to be molten down. If they were smart they'd turn em around and sell em to owners who respect firearms, and make an extra profit for the police department. Society is ass backwards these days.
