About how much longer until the spots are earth facing?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31814453

They are earth facing right now, but not in a geoeffective position. That's probably what you meant. I would give it 5 days to be directly geoeffective.
 Quoting: #Geomagnetic_Storm#

Anytime GOES picks up a flare (ie these Cs) it is geoeffective and we get radiation here on Earth. It may not produce an Earth bound CME or geo effective storm, but if GOES picks it up, it is geo effective.

Take as look at the Global D absorption map.

They may be slightly geo-effective but that is irrelevant as they are not even directly Earth facing yet.

An Irish Bookie PaddyPower are offering odds of 16/1 that 2013 has the largest geomagnetic storm on record.

What do you think? A good bet there?

Is that like a real online bet? Well. Statistically we're in solar maximum, and it's 2013, suns poles are due to flip anytime. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet. It wouldn't take a very strong storm to have the worst on record.

How is that small scale radiation affecting us in any way bro? Please enlighten me as to what negative effects we're seeing on earth right now due to that very small absorption.

Yeah one of the biggest bookies in the UK. Hugely popular.

8/1 that the UK national grid shuts down for a day or more too in 2013.

Thats what I thought, looking at it from a purely statistical standpoint with the information around currently, 16/1 seems a nonsense price. But I'm far from a registered Suntard so thought I'd put word out first and see what I got back.

Thanks!

We're at minimal geo effectiveness right now people, there are no affects being perceived from this. They are technically geo-effective, and will increase and become more geo effective as they rotate around. Given their current position they aren't really affecting us. I doubt we even had a transformer blow.

At 16/1 shit even if you lost you could've just bet $100 and it would be worth it. Then there's always that chance though.

And i'm reinforcing his statement that they are non geo effective. Small scale radiation like what you have shown here have just about no noticeable effects, other than that you may get a reading on some meter.

I am arguing that in fact it IS in a geo effective POSITION simply for the fact [/b radiation is being picked up by a chart that records radiation out put, GOES. Ergo if GOES can pick up an increase in radiation, it is in fact in a geo effective position and if there were a flare and resulting CME that would also be geo effective. Get it ???

It was simple statement of fact that you have blown out of proportion.

We use those small readings to analyze future outcomes of solar events. They are the first response systems that indicate threats such as incoming geo-magnetic storms. everything that is geo-effective, earth directed or not is quite significant.
