Looks like a "dodge and burn tool" in photoshop. Used to use it all the time when I was going to school and additionally as a freelance digital artist. It jumped out at me really quick. Notice the bottom of the white area where it goes directly from the white to the red color. Classic dodge and burn... I'm calling it bsflag

No offense. I'm not saying it isn't genuine otherwise, but the photo draws speculation...

The same image is on the JPL web site. The white is probably from the interaction of the cleaning brush with the actual surface rock. Real color looks to be more grey.

Crazy as it sounds maybe it's just... a white rock that had red dust brushed off by the tool on the rover. The spot is only roughly 2x2.5 inches.

"Curiosity" teases...that's not quite scientific. I suppose it is a way of attracting the public interest, but it is not good science.
