Watch out for Apophis
A 900 foot-wide asteroid will make the latest in a series of close approaches to the Earth tomorrow.
Scientists have ruled out any possibility of a cataclysmic collision - yet - but there remains a non-negligible chance of the asteroid Apophis smashing into Earth in 2036.

Why wouldnt they calculate the requisite angle to fire a weapon at it to put it off path? Other than that being problematically dangerous.

And that's what this Apophis thing looks like in the sky right now:

just 16 Mag. despite closest approach about now

Herschel measures Apophis' albedo - the 23 instead of 33% mean the (in)famous NEA is bigger (but it's still harmless):

i find that image interesting. just by doing some BASIC tweaking in an image editor, i can make those images more interesting than that.

just by tweaking the colours a bit, i can bring cool detail out in the blue one. now, question is, what the FUCK is the point of three indistinct blobs, in pretty colours, exactly?

are they trying to say 'this is the best we can do'? because i know for a fact that is BULLSHIT!

No, magnitude 16 is many times too dim to be seen by eye. You can't even see it in most amateur telescopes by eyepiece alone, it requires long exposure photographs.

When processing astronomical images you must be careful to not over-enhance or else all you're doing is bringing out "detail" of camera noise. Those images already look like they're at the limit of what can be "enhanced."

It'll miss.

Asteroid Apophis Takes a Pass in 2036

After tracking asteroid 99942 Apophis with NASA's giant Goldstone radar dish, astronomers are now certain that the threatening asteroid has no chance of striking Earth in 2036.
