Anyway, if life existed on Earth before Oxygen, wouldn't that mean that the "primordial soup" is disproven? That would suggest that life did not indeed come forth from the "primordial soup" but from another source instead. |

I don't see how this relates to Darwin though, What we have here could be some of the first biological matter the earth ever saw, the very bottom of the tree. I am afraid i am most confused as i seem to have been brought to the future by a man named John Titor. Anyhow, he brought me here to answer your question. Answer - Many bacteria and indeed other microorganisms are capable of metabolic processes without using oxygen, these are known as anerobic. You will find they are quite common, and should be referenced in any high school textbook. Good day sir! |

What? you think the planet formed with oxygen and anatmosphere around it? Are you an idiot? Oxygen the the atmosphere we've inherited is simply the by-products (waste) of whatever preceded us. |

Of course, bacteria are how science explain the production of O2, or at least some of it...those little bugs can live with out oxygen but produce it as a byproduct. Anonymous Coward User ID: 31812044 United Kingdom 01/09/2013 06:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Guys before you shit yourselves. The article probably means free oxygen. Ie oxygen gas floating about. The oxygen would have been present, just not in gas form. Pure water is 33% oxygen for example, thats without oxygen gas being dissolved in it. All the oxygen gas we have today was probably liberated from compounds by the likes of ancient photosynthetic micro-organisms. |

You should look up the Miller Urey experiments. They created a very early earth atmosphere in a controlled environment that contained just ammonia and the like and subjected it to electrical discharges. Over 20 different animo acids formed chemically. The building blocks of life. If that can happen here it can happen anywhere. This is why NASA and some Biologists are so interested in the likes of geothermal vents and hot springs on other planets. |
