Re: America Needs a Raise: The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage
The problem with raising the minimum wage is that Companies never bear the cost of labor, the consumer does...in other words, if you raise the minimum wage, the price of products produced by minimum wage workers (usually food products) is going to go up...

This economy used to have ebb and flow, money flowed up, then poured back down. But with shrinking wages, Multi-national banks no longer loaning to small business, and increasing inflation in energy, food, and housing (the three catagories they don't put in CPI, but the ones that matter most), it's all flowing straight to the top now...

A raise in the minimum wage won't fix our economy...

If you want to fix the economy, re-instate Glass-Steagall, pass a balanced budget amendment, repeal the Federal Reserve Act, and pass a Constitutional Amendment that says only United States Citizens who are actual individual people can donate to political campaigns...

Well that's why I just go on food stamps, the hell with it!!! If my work place wants to pay me the same darn minimum wage as my mother earned when she had a job in the seventies, then I am going to collect all I can. Considering now that my mother can't work because she is disabled... so I have to bring in the income now.

Have you ever considered learning a skill that would make you more valuable out in the work force, or is minimum wage the top end of your potential?

Yes I have and it is more complicated then that. For one I have a combined type of ADHD and that stops me from doing some types of jobs. I have been trying to get my disability forever and still haven't gotten it after three years of trying. Also I don't want to go to college at the moment because I don't want to end up being in debt, no thank you!

Re: America Needs a Raise: The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage
if u raise minimum wage ALL that u do is GIVE WASHINGTON MORE TAX $$. the cost of goods will go up,ppl get layed off,and the economy resets. the low wage earners have no more money, valuewise. and the lower middle class will become poorer, therefore lowering buying power n hurt the economy more. I DONT WANT A CUT IN MY PAY THANK YOU!!. that is what really happens. the only ppl making money on this is the government.
now since most ppl wont understand economics. look at ny state. we havea higher minimum wage. the government gladly spent that money over the years, along with the lotto $$,that was supposedly set aside for education. where are we now??? BBBBB RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR OOOOOOOOOOOOO KKKK EEEEEE!! BROKE!!! within the next 2yrs schools will run outa $$ local county n town governments are going broke.
at the moment to keep pensions paid, they r borrowing more from the state. u see a downward spiral???unemployment is over 8% ,above the national ave. plus businesses r leaving the state. NY STATES SOLUTION IS TO KEEP RAISING MINIMUM WAGE=more $$ for them to tax=spend like crazy=umm dumb dumb circle to no where.
a few yrs ago the state did this ,and yes it was like a $1.00 cut in pay each time they raised it.next time i leave the state. at this rate i am working to lose money. ummm aint i suppose to work n make more??

Why chase what little manufacturing we have left abroad.

And also, there are many, many who are not even worth minimum wage! And some are not even honest to be trusted with a job!

Believe me, I have hired and employed a few over the years! Hard way to learn to be much more careful when hiring.
One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

You don't know what it is like until you are that sort of person that struggles like that. So yeah make your comments all you want my friend but you can't understand my situation in whole. It would take me two months just to explain it all to you.

Re: America Needs a Raise: The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage
My question is why bother driving to work every day when I have to pay for gas and car insurance and I only get paid $7.25? No use going to college now either because it took me two and a half years to pass Algebra II class and graduate high school. (I graduated when I was 20.) I was even on Vyvanse during high school and that only made me too wound up and thirsty during the school day. A lot of colleges now want you to take some kind of math class over again. Guess if I ever get fired a bunch of times from jobs they will finally give me my disability. NOBODY can accuse me of not trying. And to the poster who said the government would just tax people and such once the minimum wage was raised... I agree, but the government finds ways to tax citizens anyway so blah..... : /

This should happen. Then the rest of the major employers will leave the USA and that will be it. Death.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31770957

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing raising the minimum wage to $8.75 an hour from the current $7.25.

In his State of the State address Wednesday, the first-term Democratic governor says New Yorkers at the low end of the income ladder should earn more.

The increase is supported by powerful Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Manhattan Democrat. Republicans who control the Senate prefer business tax breaks to spur the economy.

A person earning minimum wage in New York makes $14,616 a year.

Cuomo notes the minimum wage in 19 states, including neighbors in Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts, is higher than New York.

Sure! Why stop there?! Just raise minimum wage so that people who flip burgers make $50K/yr. The economics of the continually raising minimum wage don't work. The floor for wages can not be set to create a comfortable living wage. It simply places upward pressure on the rest of the payscales. And since there are more people in the lower income brackets than in the higher ones the cost of all goods will rise significantly to pay for the increase in wage cost. Any gain that minimum wage earners would theortically gain from increasing the minimum wage would be wiped out by cost of living rising. This is a typical liberal zero sum calculation that does not bear out in real life. It is similar to the theory that raising taxes increases revenue. There is a peak threshold around 45% that people will pay before output declines or they find other ways to shelter income from taxes.
