Concealed Carry question
Well I finally reserved a spot in a CCW course today. Should've done it long ago, but I digest. (I know, it's digress)

I've heard a few horror stories over the last several months from permit holders. We seem to have some local police who don't look kindly on citizens arming themselves. The worst was being pulled over by police and having guns drawn on them for no reason other than the cops knew they had a permit from running the plate number.

I know the proper procedures (roll window down hands clearly visible on steering wheel & calmly informing them if you're carrying). I'm not worried about being pulled over I have nothing to hide. I just don't relish the thought of a cop pointing his weapon at me and screaming. Especially since I'm nearly completely deaf and likely won't understand what it is they're screaming at me.

I'm certainly not going to let my concern keep me from excercising my right to be able to defend myself. I'm just curious if anyone holding a permit has experienced this sort of thing?

Thanks for your input.

Never had a problem Op, and I am also hearing impaired. My best guess is that the people around us are going to become increasingly paranoid, including the reactions by law enforcement to any perceived threat. All you can do is make the choice to carry or not and forge ahead as best you can. It isn't hard to communicate to the officer that you are hearing impaired and carrying. Just ask him to look at you when he speaks so you can understand. If he can see your hands hopefully this won't be a problem.

It depends completely on what state you live in and even what city within that state. Here in TN, carry permit holders are treated with respect as far as I know. I've had my carry permit since 2008 and I've never had a problem or heard of anyone having a problem with cops here in Tennessee.

If you live in a state like CA, IL, or NY... God help you.

A Concealed Carry Permit is a 'Good Guy' card. A holder is known to be a follower of the law in good standing. The Popo have always treated me with the same respect I show them.

I am skeptical of the stories of police abusing card holders. Sounds like bullshit to me.

Laws vary depending on the state. In many states, you are not required to inform police you are carrying unless they specifically ask you if you are. Sounds like you don't live there.

There are, in fact, still cops who believe in the 2nd amendment and support your right to carry. Of course there are certainly douchebags everywhere.

Know your rights, be respectful. That should be sufficient for all but the douchebags.

I have had zero bad experiences where I live. Your mileage may vary.

If I have a weapon in the vehicle, I hand over my permit along with my DL. Just good etiquette.

Re: Concealed Carry question
Here in Pennsylvania you don't have to tell if you are pulled over. I got pulled over coming home from the range once. (I forgot to register my car.) The cop had to see my range bag in the back seat. He said nothing and let me go and just said to get my registration that day.

I have a friend who is a retired cop. He got stopped in New jersey once and the Jersey cop wanted to arrest him because he had his gun with him. He has a permit good for all 50 states. When the cop called in to see what he should do. his boss told him to let my friend go and apologize to him.

So it realy depends where you are and who stops you.

Never had a problem with the fuzz.
I would strongly advise tho;
Keep it concealed-Keep it a SECRET.
Tell no one that you carry.
(other than law enforcement, obviously)
The reasons should be self evident. jmo

I've never had a problem either. The last time I was pulled over and told the officer I was a permit holder and that I was carrying the officer told me with a smile that if "you dont show me yours, I wont show you mine."

And just to add... even if you have a permit and are not required to tell law enforcement, if you have a weapon in your vehicle, not telling the officer will result in a very bad day for you..

If anyone engages in violence or kidnapping against you when you have broken no laws then THEY are the aggressor and law breaker.

In such a case it is your duty and moral obligation(IMO) to resist them, up to and including deadly force.

Say what now? How does that pertain to anything we were talking about? I simply said.. not telling an officer who has pulled you over, that you have a weapon in car, can result in a very bad day for you. I don't know about you, but if I don't have anything to hide, I certainly do not mind telling the officer that I have a weapon in my vehicle, because if by some chance he searches the vehicle and finds said weapon and you did not tell him you had it before hand, your ass is going to jail.

Here in Ohio someone was 57 seconds late in telling the cop he had a CCW license. He had to hire a lawyer and go to court over it. His lawyer won the case....

I'm in OH and you couldn't be more right about depends on which city. Most local traveling I do is in a city (suburb of Cleveland) known for a few problem cops in this regard.

Also, in OH you do have to inform them if you are carrying. They know you have a permit when they run your plate. Not necessary if you're not carrying, but I would tell them in that case too.

Yep... I've heard Thieveland is the worst in this regard. Go figure that's where you're most likely to need it.

The reason I brought that up was I had a rather terrifying experience several yrs ago due to this very thing.

Had to park a ways down the street from a friends house and was walking to his house. Further down the street the cops had pulled someone over who ran. (found this out later)

A cruiser was driving straight at me and a cop was screaming something at me. I just froze in the middle of the street with my hands open palms facing them absolutely confused. 4 or 5 of them piled out of this car and gang tackled, cuffed me, and slammed my face into the hood of the cruiser.

Things were quickly straightened out, but they acted like it was no big deal. I thought I was gonna be shot, wasn't fun.

Just a little background on that. Thanks for your input : )
