Quoting: Oyster except the ones who say that Jesus was actually several people all rolled in to one. I deny the historical existence of Jesus, as there is not a single shred of evidence that suggests I should even consider doing otherwise. And yes, the Jesus character is an amalgamation of many gods and god-men that came before, and his story is the same astrology that has been told and retold a hundred different ways. After all, Christianity was invented as the universal ('catholic', literally) religion, to unite and control the Roman empire to a degree beyond the reach of their armies and politicians at the time. John the Baptist existed, however, and HE is the true 'messiah' (well, as close to one as you're going to find). I agree with this |

Too many things wrong with the whole idea that we can be absolved of any responsibility for how we conduct ourselves by a martyr sacrificing himself for us. If it made sense our court systems would be following that same example of 'justice'. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 32778389 01/21/2013 11:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you seriously study the history of the Christian church and literature, you'll find the probable authors and who the historical people were. Jesus is a combination of Yeshu of the Babylonian Talmud, Josephus, Apollonius, and Lucius Plutarch. Baccus Son of Panther, Hesus and Krishna were gods thrown in there. |

Ever hear of catholicism? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9142675 'Catholic' simply means 'universal'. Go back to medieval times and ask around. There was *THE* church. That's it. Catholics were not just a sect of Christianity; they essentially WERE Christianity. Christianity was intentionally and specifically created for the sole purpose of being a UNIVERSAL religion, one that consumed its rivals and assimilated a few of their features in order to satisfy as many people as possible. The inclusion of the 'Old Testament' covers the Judaistic base. Christmas trees, Easter bunnies, etc., were to placate the pagans. And so on. Rome had a big empire to control, but not enough manpower to do the job right. So they turned to the omnipresent boogieman in the sky to assist them in their law enforcement and tax collecting. |

Thats historical record for you. The quote from Josephus was a known forgery. Besides that, everything said about jesus (and it wasn't much) was written years after he supposedly lived. It was hearsay. Same with Tacitus. So no one who lived at the time of Jesus wrote one word about him. There was no one who recorded his date of birth. Even though thousands supposedly witnessed him rising from the dead, no one recorded that date either. You won't find stories of Jesus in secular history books. Jesus is like Paul Bunyan and Hercules. He was a myth, taken from earlier Egyptian myths about "sun" gods. |
