The North Dakota Town Where A One-Bedroom Apartment Rents For $2,100 A Month
A plain, one-bedroom apartment in Williston, N.D., rents for $2,100 a month. For this price, you could rent a one-bedroom apartment in New York City.

Williston is not New York City. There are 30,000 residents and one department store. The nearest city is two hours away.

Re: The North Dakota Town Where A One-Bedroom Apartment Rents For $2,100 A Month
Williston North Dakota is in the Heart of the Bakken oil boom for the U.S. There is another boom across the border in South East Saskatchewan & South Western Manitoba.

Hookers earn more money in Williston North Dakota than they do in Las Vegas.

A very young man fresh out of high school asked the bank for a loan to build a hotel. The bank said no! So he went to Weatherford (a oil & gas service company) and asked them if they needed rooms for their employees. They said yes and promissed to rent every room for 5 years and signed a legal agreement. He went back to the bank and now owns a brand new hotel.

Williston North Dakota is projected to have a population of 400 000 in another 4 years.

P.S. Williston has more than one department store, a walmart, most restaurant chains, ect. All the major corporations are building franchises. Walmart doesn't even bother stocking the shelves, they roll everything out on crates and the people pick it bare immediatetly.

What is the ethic break down for that area? If it is just a booming town coming into it's own I think it is at least 90% white.

Give it five years and it will be Chicago North.

Went through there this past summer. It is crazy. RV parked where there is no water or sever. Stayed in a town 100 miles away in Montana and there were workers driving it everyday to work. Almost sold my 5th wheel. Should have. We have friends with a start up business there and hubby would be hired right off. However money is not everything eh?

Yep. I've been tempted to buy my parents miniwinnie RV and head up there myself. The jobs are there but the housing isn't. That 1 bedroom is probably shared by atleast 4 guys who work alternate shifts and make serious cash. If you have the money to invest in building a house or a business that's the area to go. I saw a news show about waitress's making over $200 on a slow day at a regular restaurant like Denny's or IHOP. It's insane.

I'm from there. Moved away in 06 before the boom hit., Went back for the first time this spring. Got family there still, and many many friends. The boom fucked up that town. This is not a good thing. Williston wasn't very good to begin with, but this boom fucked everything up. Locals are being forced into homelessness by greedy real estate owners who want a piece of the pie. It's sick what has happened there. There has been more murders in Williston since I left, than there was the entire 17 years I called that shit hole my home. And the local law enforcement is so corrupt, inept, and backward, I'd be surprised if they could figure out how to conduct a proper murder investigation.

Think about what that NPR piece is telling you. It's a living horror. Put yourselves in the shoes of the people who call that place home. Hookers make more money in Williston than they do in Vegas?! These people who call Williston home, they don't recognize such as daily life where they grew up. That came with the boom, and is new. All the violence, the influx of drugs and the increase in rapes, the town was a bit rowdy when I grew up there, yeah, but this is ludicrous. And those people that chased after the boom, even NPR tells you they won't bring family there, won't call Williston home. They don't care enough to give that place due respect, treat it's people right, and contribute to society. That boom attracted the parasites, those who's only purpose there is to get as much as they can and leave.

ha I live in florida I can get a 2bedroom apartment for over $600 a month I may make less here but when you think about and add up the monthly cost its pretty pointless to move there unless you want to do the oil thing go for it but live in a boring place.

Similar costs for a 1 bedroom at Fort Mac, Alberta, between 1700-1800 and look how far out that is! Oil communities, so it's expected I guess.

yes. I am very familiar with a company that does business there. 21 days on, 21 off.. $750/day which averages out to just under $250k/yr.

Its my understanding that Williston doesn't want people opening up businesses if they aren't from there. Its been like this for at least a year... Im assuming longer. It's a little insane how much it is to live there.

That is because people are making money hand over fist there because of the oil industry. And the more money the majority of people make in an area the more things are going to cost. So all that money people are making there is really not that much since the cost to live there is so expensive now. Many of the locals and retired people have had to move out because they can't afford to live there anymore. At one restaurant there are two menus. The regular one for the locals and the more expensive ones for the people in the oil industry.
