Whats the point of going on living?
Everything we do doesent matter in the grand scheme of things, we all end up dead and forgoten. I remember my own grandmother died and i was very sad, but after only a couple years i never think of her and no one even mentions her any more. Just seems like life is alot of pain and suffering with no payoff. (By the way don't bother with the god and heaven bullshit, I don't belive in that crap)

Re: Whats the point of going on living?
Just my thoughts.

Live and do good things for you and others.
Surely you will be remembered.

And maybe find meaning in life.

Today I live to take care of my family and friends, for me it is gratifying and I feel fine.

Live to learn, and be a better person in the world.
Just one any....

The first symptom of stupidity is to think that we already know everything...

In the NORSE tradition

You Fight Til You Die.

Pick a fight, like injustice, or animal rights, or Global Warming, or whatever.

Choose a side and fight til you die.

Well if you don't believe in something greater than this world, then there is no point to living.

It's the biggest flaw that an Atheist has.

Op are you serious??
Why are there stars, why are there black holes, why is there murder, why do we have to die?

just because you can't answer these things does not negate existence of everything, we are part of it all. It never ends.

Re: Whats the point of going on living?
The point is to avoid death. Your mind is a seed. It was planted in your body, but to avoid death it must grow and flourish beyond your body. Most people take Jesus' parable of the seed as some moral metaphor, but it is much more literal. The human mind can inhabit more than just the body. It can spread into all things and all places. If you die before the mind is integrated into the surroundings, the seed and mind die. (at least until it recovers enough to be planted into a new body) Eventually one realizes that overlapping minds may possess the same matter, at which point it becomes apparent that we are all one mind. However, it is a complex substance capable of vast individualization. I have integrated my mind with all the universe. If my body dies, I will live on in all that is, all that was, and all that will be.

The way most live their lives today I would have thought the point of life was to accumulate as much pastic, metal and other useless shit that give us an illusion of grandeur. I dont care what I have as long I have more than you is pretty much the moto these day aint it?

Re: Whats the point of going on living?
Well....it took a chance in a gazillion....ie my folks meeting, having sex, healthy womb/ova + the actual sperm...for me to be born. Even if my folks were crap (which they werent)...for me to BE....alive, aware, whole, not brain damaged to appreciate the sky, earth, trees.

WE all know we are going to be dead within 0-125 years....so why cut it short so freaking early? I can do as I please...make/create what I want, travel or stay still...be friends or have none. The consequences of doing harm to others...Im pretty sure would end me up in prison plus would make me really stressed out and a churning gut everyday is why I'd never even start with drugs or want to end up with my freedom taken away.

I had kids...I like them enough. I hope I dont cause them more greif by dying too soon. What Im getting at is....with most deaths...it effects family/friends. SO the point of going on living is WHY NOT? I'll be dead soon enough.....my nothingness (I'm agnostic and so is everyone else really as there is no answer) will come. I dont hate life or people around me enough to wipe myself out. And besides even if my home life was that unhappy...I'd rather fuck OFF to somewhere else and just not be in contact anymore. CURIOSITY....of what could be...if I wasnt so lazy as to do nothing about things that I could change.

WE also have an inbuilt survival mechanism. If we didnt....we would all have died out thousands of years ago. Life is not all about YOU.....and if you dont care about ancestors or who those who follow...offspring, future....sure an asteroid could wipe us all out...the fact remains....I really want to know what happens next. Its like a movie....you gonna turn it off before THE END? Dont be lazy/selfish...you might like the ending....its gotta be better than suicide.

Re: Whats the point of going on living?
think of it more like a journey. like an amazing gift to experience this world with all its ups and downs. Especially the challenges we face help us to grow - to grow a greater awareness, to expand our consciousness. Perhaps life is about learning, to see and feel, to be apart of a material existence. Perhaps we have even chosen to expeirence this physical existence because we wanted to know what it feels like. Explore the physical as well as the spiritual realm and become aware of its interconnectedness.

What happens when you touch your skin, take a deep breath or smile to yourself and others? Does something physical influence the spiritual the stillness within you? Does this also work the other way around?

In the end it may seem to others that the life of a person (and life in gerneral) was a painful journey that does not have a lasting impact. But this is a very limited view. Does it really matter if your name is in some history book? In the end this society might well not make it and different civilizations will rise again - we will be all but forgotten.

Everybody has an impact on the world, even the most subtle things like smiling to a stranger can have far reaching consequences if you think about how something like that might have affected you. Are those little things in day to day life perhaps not really the big things?

We can all sit around and be arm chair quarterbacks in the warmth of our homes but

I bet you wouldn't be thinking the same way if you were out of work

homeless with young children dependent on you for food.
